you old gits.I’m now classing myself as a JCL.
What’s your problem, Bungalow? Born in ’65 I presume, like my goodself, and therefore aged 5 or 6 at the time? I was there, why weren’t you? ;)
Only started going in 1972
I was amazed that my old man took me to Maine Road, as a dyed in the wool, “fute-baw is a game for jessies”, rugby mon. But take me he did.8 April 2010 at 8:01 pm #29065That game in particular caught the interest of the Wigan public, maybe because it was the first time for a while they’d got drawn against a first division league club. It was a very cold day and I rememer trying to get a local referee to call of our game on Laithwaite Park so I could go, which I managed (that wasn’t too difficult as those who remember playing there will testify)
8 April 2010 at 8:17 pm #29066This was the first season watching Latics for me as well, but my Mam wouldn’t let me go to City. She reckoned I’d get beaten up, kidnapped, rodgered or all three, and she was probably right.

Not sure what you are asking me there, BB1965.12 April 2010 at 6:36 pm #29270Ok then talking of City who remembers the friendly at Springy N P L select v City? Cant remember the score was too busy dodging the missiles. I was in the terrace to the right of the Phoenix and there was bricks flying everywhere

It was a very cold day and I rememer trying to get a local referee to call of our game on Laithwaite Park so I could go, which I managed (that wasn’t too difficult as those who remember playing there will testify)The game prior to the City match also caught the attention of the Wigan public if my memory serves me right! It was at home to South Shieds in the NPL and drew a crowd of over 8000 which stood as a record attendance in the NPL for some time …..I think (no research done, honest)
I was there and at the City match and can recall both vividly, despite being only 7 years old at the time. My grandma knitted me a blue and white scarf for the match, which I still have along with a family photo of me wearing this outside Maine road some 30 odd years before Manccinni made the style his own!!!
I can also recall being allowed to stay up and watch the game on M.O.T.D and wondering why my 13 year old brother again started crying when Colin Bell scored that goal ! I was still at that age when I was glad just to be watching my team play, to be shouting and singing and the result was only a matter of minor coincidence. I would say that this attitude changed the during the following season especialy when we when we lost at Wembley, long journey home that one!
Anyway, point of the matter, the Man City match was my Dads favourite Tics game despite watching them from Cheshire league days untill now where he is a season ticket holder of over 20 odd years and he still talks about Jeff Davies, Joe Fletcher (who he was mates with) Gilly, Denis Reeves, Billy Southerland, Kenny Morris etc. with great fondness . He turned 70 a couple of years ago and I attempted to get the M.O.T.D. programme from that famous night on DVD for him as a gift. I thought that I had a good chance as I have a really good contact in a senior BBC researcher who is based in London. Despite numerous calls and favours requested I was told directly by a bloke from the BBC archive dept. that the recording of the programme had not been saved and no compilation video/DVD of FA Cup goals of the round had been made !! I wasn’t convinced but never got any further in this matter.
Still that 20 second clip on You tube brought the memories flooding back. Colin Bell, the wanker, I’m glad he hurt his knee !!!!!!!!!!!
