Cant see why you would give Barrow the job. We have conceded a lot of goals since he took over whilst still setting up defensively. Not entirely his fault through injuries but he has been sacked before from the job. He would not be my choice neither would Jewell or Jones. I think we need refreshing a different direction and I certainly believe that David Sharpe needs the right guy this time . The lad is under pressure after what’s happened and he needs a good season as well. I still believe in most of the players if coached well and I’m optimistic if we bring in the right guy. YAMS.

Appoint the right guy then, just like that!
Caldwell was the right guy last season.
Rosler was three seasons ago.

And why not give Barrow a chance? We are conceding goals because we are being less negative and defensive. Out of the six games he’s been in charge we’ve won two, scored eight goals in total of four and lost by the odd goal to the top two teams.

And the last time we appointed someone from within the club we won the league.
So the best criteria is an ex player who knows the club. The coaching staff is mostly ex players is it not?. How many have come through the academy to become regulars in the first team?. Why have we so many loanees at the club when our own youngsters have been farmed out?. Ex players don’t mean they are the right men for the job. Something at Wigan Athletic clearly isn’t working at the minute despite having Barrow Atherton Doolan etc here that’s why I believe we need refreshing up a bit. Sammy, of course its gonna be hard to find the right man and for David Sharpe,s sake I hope he finds him ex player or not. Sentiment is great but only if it works.
You mean ex-players such as Jewell, Martinez and Caldwell as opposed to Coyle, Mackay and Joyce, who were not? And could the club afford someone like Bruce or Rosler, for whom compensation was paid to Brentford, given there is no longer the financial clout to do that again? And I’m not saying Barrow is the best choice but I’d have him over some of the other suggestions being banded about on here.

Regarding the academy, do you think Wigan Athletic is going to be the first choice for the best local talent? We might drop lucky occasionally but are you really saying some of those that came through in recently times are good enough to hold a first team place? They have been farmed out because they didn’t make the grade. And loanees are part and parcel of today’s game. Sometimes you win, Wildschut for example.

It isn’t sentiment at all. Whelan isn’t going to splash the cash anymore so the club will have make use of its resources in the most cost effective way. Some people will have difficulty with that, mainly those who have only known the good times, but it’s how it’s going to be so get used to it.

From the latest WEP interview with young Dave:

“You need good people around you, I need good people around me, and I trust Jonathan and Graham with my life. They care so much about this football club”.

I read that as “The new manager will either be Graham Barrow, or someone who will be expected to work with Graham Barrow”.

So it matters not if your a shite manager as long as you care about the club, an ex player maybe. If matters jack shit that you did the job donkeys years ago and got sacked. You love the club so that’s enough. Wucking Funderful.

Barrow gets the job and it will save me a few quid as well! Backwards move in my opinion and like I have said before, a clear out is needed! As for ex players Martinez, Jewell and Caldwell. Martinez was employed when we had reached the Prem, there was a lot more money to play with and we were attracting half decent players. Jewell had the initial injection of cash from Whelan in the master plan that came to fruition courtesy of a couple of decent strikers that cost a few quid and Caldwell had parachute money and not too bad a squad left over from The Championship and so that was a doddle by any manager’s standards in my opinion, even Coyle and McKay could have pulled that one off! No room for sentiment in football, especially when things don’t appear to be hunky dory!

I actually think this thread is full of valid points and opinions, without any of us falling into a slanging match, fair play everyone.

My take is this. I’d like Nigel Pearson. He has experience, he has won league one before and he is a strong, tough character. I feel confident that with the squad he will be left with, minus the loan players and with some shrewd additions, we would walk league one under his leadership.
However, being realistic, I am not sure we would be able to get him here, finances wise, or if he would even consider us. But when I hear random mention of the likes of the Bristol Rovers manager, or the Luton manager, etc, it doesn’t instill me with much hope or excitement. Neither does the likes of Ryan Giggs, inexperienced and wouldn’t come anyway. I believe that to uppoint someone without experience will be a big mistake, as we have just seen with Joyce. I’m not even talking about Caldwell coming back, because that would be diabolical and would be a cop-out appointment.

So for me, it’s splash out and get Nigel Pearson in to shake us up and freshen things up. Or give Graham Barrow the job. Either way, I think with the nucleus of this squad, and battle to keep hold of Morsy, Burn and Powell, also get Grigg and Bogle firing on all cylinders, there’s no doubt we can have a great season next season. We will be one of the big boys in league one, a scalp, so let’s barnstorm our way up the league, and take out this seasons frustrations on a few teams.

Who do you want as the next boss? I haven’t seen you name anyone definitive yet. ;)

I don’t know who this question was aimed towards but I would have Nigel Adkins. However, I think it will be Barrow.

Rosler still had the supporters in his pocket and they chanted his name at Bolton the week before he was sacked!!!
He could well be a championship manager with fleetwood next season because that horrible shower from up yonder are making a bit of a balls of it all now.
I’d love to see him do that because he has had some rough times in his life and has been a nearly man most of his career.
If he gets fleet wood promoted his stock will rise very highly but if he doesn’t I wouldn’t be surprised to see a return for him.
If h did return he would be very welcome in
My view and to be honest he gave us some good times in his short spell.none of the other candidates come close
He would be my choice , very very underrated

I agree Jewell did enjoy the benefit of Whelan’s cash but others before him had failed with the same cash potential. Martinez was appointed after Whelan had decided he could no longer bankroll the club. He kept us in the Premiership for three seasons, almost a fourth, AND won the FA Cup on the lowest budget of any PL club. Caldwell did not inherit too bad a squad at all – most were cleared out – but had money to build a brand new team for which we didn’t necessarily pay over the odds to assemble. His sacking is still considered by many to have been premature.

On the other hand Coyle and Rosler enjoyed the lion’s share of the parachute payments and still failed. Joyce was just a very bad choice.

Would like to see a manager who likes to play football. The type of football that is turbo. Football that is nice and football that is really belting. Football that is dreamy and football that doesn’t smell of poo. Football played the Wigan way. Unsmelly and nice to watch. Football that is carefree and exhilarating and splendid. Football that we haven’t seen since Bobby came and changed things and made things a borefest and undreamy and non turbo and simply silly billy football that sent you to sleep. We want our football back. Turbo charged super duper nice carefree football.
