..yep, the we need to learn bollox was trotted out for the 22nd time this season.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez admits he could dip into the transfer market following the defeat at Arsenal.

The Latics went down to a comprehensive 3-0 reverse in North London as Robin van Persie netted a hat-trick, while Gary Caldwell was shown a straight red card for a last-man challenge on Cesc Fabregas.

Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi was in fine form and kept the score down before half-time, but the away side never posed a threat going forward.

Martinez admits he has been boosted by players returning from injury, but says he is always on the lookout for additions.

“We were going to be dictated by the recoveries of Victor Moses, James McCarthy and Franco Di Santo,” he told Sky Sports.

“It has been really positive – they have come back quicker than we expected.

“But we always try to improve the squad, we always try and help the players that we’ve got and we’ll carry on doing that till the last day of the window.”

On the game, he added: “We never started the first half with the tempo you need to have when you play a talented side like Arsenal.

      Fear
“We showed a little bit of fear, sometimes the tempo was too low.

“But I was pleased with how we started the second half. Obviously we had Ali (Al Habsi) to thank for keeping us in the game but we started a lot braver and we started to be stronger and cope with the tempo.

“The sending off was probably the final action that changed things.

“Overall it was a performance that I feel we need to learn a lot from because we can come down to places like this and be ourselves.”

Al Habsi produced a string of fine saves to stem the tide before the break and Martinez believes Wigan are fortunate to have him at the DW Stadium.

“We’re very fortunate in having the keepers we have at the football club. Ali, since he’s arrived, he’s been a really strong competitor,” he remarked.

“He’s been developing really well and you can see he really enjoys his football playing with ourselves.”

The Latics stay in the bottom three and are well and truly embroiled in a relegation dogfight, but Martinez is up for the challenge ahead.

He added: “We know that is something in our nature. We know why we are that position, the margins are very, very small.

“We have 15 games where we know exactly what we have to do and we are excited about the challenge ahead, nothing else.

“The margins in the Premier League are so small and that’s why it’s the best league.”

Not a lot else he can say, really.

I think he’s going to be disappointed though if he thinks he’ll be getting any meaningful money out of Whelan this week.

If Di Santo and Moses are like having two new quality signings, why did he not play them all season when fit?

Watson will be named as striker when rodders and zog head go on deadline day, and martinez looks even more bewildered. He looks like he is on the edge if you watch the interview.

Can’t really argue with that.

Apart from the Watson up front bit

          Griff,

Are you also becoming annoyed with him?

I feel in your recent comments you would be very pleased to see the worst manager we have ever had depart our club.

          Nope, not annoyed at all.

It’s clear he’s struggling, but so would anyone with the players we have and the financial constraints we have compared to other clubs.

I think we are about where we are supposed to be.

And in any case, what is without doubt is that Whelan isn’t for getting rid so there isn’t much point getting annoyed.

I am more or less resigned to relegation and that isn’t the worst thing that can happen to this club. After next Monday night (transfer window) we’ll know whether we (as a club) are up for the fight or not.

Oh, by the way… Kenny Swain, Chris Hutchings. Just two names for you.

Martinez is the worst manager we have ever had, a lot worse than Swain.

The players we have would be ok playing to their ability and not the way Martinez makes them play.

If you are not annoyed at what we serve up every week you must have the patients of a saint or don’t bother watching the games. It’s awful watching the team do what they do and to have the manager talk utter shtie fate games.

Relegation would not be a bad thing for this club but for god sake let’s go down with some pride.

Just your opinion mate. And I can’t take you seriously if you’re going to spell patience like that.

Your clutching at straws mate there. Clearly nothing to offer in defence on him.

Maybe you should look at the incompetent manager we have and all his mistakes instead of picking at my poor grammar.

Valid point with the spelling though. Very poor effort. Natdan out!

Allow me to make a projected analysis for next Monday. We will have brought in no new players and we will have sold or shipped out 2 ! Al Habsi would be a fool to commit to the club via a signature due to the distinct possibility of us going down and so he will remain on our chief nemesis’s books ! Thats about it really :P

If that ends up being correct Filmoss then our goose is definatley cooked!

I wouldn’t bet against it mind.

swain wasnt a bad manager considering he had nothing, hutching did no worse than martinez in his time, but we will go down this season but unlike some i think we will bounce back up, which in the long run if we did that season after season, we would have a bigger fan base because the excitement would be there season after season, just my opinion mind ;) ps got my retro shirt today with my 5% discount :)

My stance on Martinez has hardly changed, mate, in 18 months and if you think I’m going to waste my Saturday night repeating myself for the benefit of someone who only ever comes on here once in a blue moon, and then only to moan, you have another think coming.

How ironic, the introduction of the retro shirt as we regress as a club !! :)
