Vaguely remember a game at home in the 90’s? against Notts County called off at last minute and their fans had already arrived. I had just arrived and was pissed off cos i’d just driven all the way from Tyldesley, and before you say it, yes, i was pissed off because i had to go back to Tyldesley early.
You are right Wigan had a 3 goal lead I think and the fog came down in the far corner of thye ground from the local River that ran at the side of the ground, the funny thing was the Wigan keeper wasn’t sure the teams had gone off and kept edging towrads the centre circle until he was certain. Wigan won the replay
we didnt win the replay of the abandoned game we made a draw – but we won the replay at springfield park 1-0 with a crowd of over 11000
Hartlepool away ..Tuesday night fog 1979 I think..I was 12 at the time and my dad sent a lettle into school Pem middle saying I was going to the dentist for the afternoon off..We went every game that season cool dad.
that game was not abandoned -it never kicked off – we got there at about 5.00 pm and it had been bright sun all the way and was clear when we got there – we went in a pub for a meal near the docks and when we came out it had gone misty – we paid at the turnstile at about 7ish -by 7.30 you could not se 20 yards in front of you and the game was called off – they would not refund our money we had to go to the main office to get a voucher for the replay.

Agreed. I am truly astounded at the things a lot of folk can remember about Latics matches from 20/30 years ago.
I can barely remember where I was living, let alone which football matches I went to.
I don’t have the stats on abandoned games, but I can remember Watford a couple of years back.
Paul Jewell ran over to us in the away end and asked if it should carry on…… and it didn’t. we were drawing I think and we drew the rematch.
I remember the 3 or 4 blokes they sent out at half-time to get rid of the lake the size of Windemere that had formed armed only with a pitch-fork each.
Yes, it was 1-1 at the time; Heskey scoring for us.
i remember us playing at springy against winsford utd in the cheshire league, the ref lost it completely and ended up abandoning the game. in the papers the following day it was said he sent all 22 off !!
such a long time ago that your your more then likely right. i stopped buying progs years ago but i was buying them that season. that is my mission tonight to see what was said in the programme after that game. they are all in order so should not be a ball ache. that game sticks in my mind because of the heavy rain in Leyland and it been on the national news. i do remember a game in possibly the FA CUP that season were there was heavy snow . possible score was 4-0 to us and i do remember a Tony Kelly free kick special flying in to the onion bag in that game.
I remember clearly, the next games programme, or around that game, having pics of the Bournemouth game in the snow. I’m sure it was abandoned on 66 minutes, or something like that. If you can find the programme, you’ll see.
Tony Kelly had left us by ’87. As had almost all the 1985 Freight Rover side.
It was funny for me, as my first game was against Wolves, the last game of the 1985-86 season. Latics won 5-3 and I was hooked. However, by the time the new season came around, it was a very different side we had, and a different manager.
I was at the Bournemouth match and it was snow where ever you went in the ground you got snowed on
Another match which got postponed was a game against Bristol Rovers which got PP at about 2-30 cue a lot of pi$$ed of Rovers fans in the Springfirld cant remember what year it was though

Cheers for confirming the snow.
I remember quite a few times, there’d be a spot of rain or it had been freezing, and as we walked up to the ground, blokes would be going the other way announcing “It’s off”.
Usually either due to a puddle forming in the corner at the away end, or the ground bring frozen in the shadow of the stand.

If I remember correctly the SP pitch was on eof the best surfaces untill we let Springfield Borough share then it went downhill from then
