A couple of seasons ago I was told that the money that the club takes on match days does not actually go to the club? I was a bit shocked but have since spoken to a few people who are of the same opinion that the money from our corporate guests programme sales etc goes to Whelco holdings and not the club?
Has anyone else heard that one?

True. Apparently it all goes directly into Whelan’s sky rocket and he blows it on red wine, women and pies every weekend.

Me not being an accountant or anything but is that not the majority of our turn over after season ticket sales and sponsorship? It’s know wonder were potless he is taking out our main income?
I ask those on here who support Whelan can that be right?
27 August 2009 at 5:53 pm #7003depends…he owns the stadium or Whelco holdings do, so why would he give up Whelco’s reneue stream and give it to Wigan Football club ltd?
Does anybody on this board know how econimics and finances work??? :ugeek:
….it appears not!!
FFS, even Chelsea have to pay back Abromovich and has to operate as a profitable company – everyone on here thinks Whelan should just pour all of his fortune into Wigan Athletic just to keep a few mindless clowns on here happy…
Lets sign a £10M striker….because he costs £10M
27 August 2009 at 6:10 pm #7007everyone on here thinks Whelan should just pour all of his fortune into Wigan Athletic just to keep a few mindless clowns on here happy…Of course he should.
Or he could sell up to Sheik Andvac, cos there’s hundreds of Arabs just dying to invest in Wigan Athletic because it’s such a money spinner.
27 August 2009 at 6:14 pm #7008Such a money spinner like Pompey and Notts County? :o
27 August 2009 at 6:22 pm #7009You can’t expect Whelan to invest, not like the Fulham chairman. You can’t expect us to keep a team together, not like Bolton. You can’t expect us to say a players not for sale and actually mean it. You can’t expect us to talk about the next level then sell everyone. You can’t expect our attendances to fall when at the end of every season we start from scratch. You can’t expect to sell 60m worth of players and invest less than half on lower league trash. Expectation is way too high on here.
27 August 2009 at 6:31 pm #7011(1) Whelan doesnt have the money that MAF has
(2) And Bolton’s team is better where exactly? They sold Anelka so what’s the difference?
(3) Players come Players go…so what?
(4) I doubt that we would get an extra 3000 fans if we bought Ronaldo for £100M – I am a season ticket holder and always have been – I think lower attendances are due to people being skint, free T.V. in pubs and also the late commers to latics – they have never thought about putting money aside for a season ticket because they never had to, unlike me who always puts money aside ;)
(5) So what you are saying is invest all of the money for the sake of it? Why?….I recon Whelan is creating a nice nest egg for when he leaves us in the same way Jack Walker did for Blackburn….who actualy thinks we would suvive a season without Whelan???
How long have you been following the Latics Bob? I guess you wasn’t watching the them at the late 80’s or early 90’s??
27 August 2009 at 6:50 pm #7013Such a money spinner like Pompey and Notts County? :oPompey – yes, almost full house every week. So potentially yes, a money spinner.
Notts County – they obviously think there is potential there, but it is not guaranteed. It’s a long way up to the money-spinning Premier League from where they are. Almost an impossible task, probably can’t be done.
Oh, hang on… but it has been done before hasn’t it? Takes a special type of bloke to have that kind of vision, drive and success.
27 August 2009 at 7:32 pm #7018Been watching the team since 1974 and hold a season ticket. Doesn’t meen I have to agree with everything though. You talk about buying someone for 100m, it’s more keeping hold of what we have. I don’t remember being lyed to as much in my time watching Latics, do you?

Also Jimmy, you forgot to mention that Fulham is in one of Britain’s most affluent areas, and their average fans’ disposal income is second only to Chelsea’s. Dead right you’d invest in them if you had the money.
28 August 2009 at 12:49 am #7056Both Wigan Athletic and Wigan Warriors are tenants at the DW Stadium (owned by the Whelco group)Both clubs pay rent to use the stadium, and is based on a percentage of their gate & season ticket receipts.
It’s as simple as that.
Are you sure its as simple as that?

As far as the corporate side is concerned Whelan (Whelco) will take a percentage to cover rent and supply of staff etc.
I think you’ll find that the DW Stadium has been or is about to be signed over to Wigan Athletic Football Club and having a contract in place for other teams/another team to ‘lodge’ there.
FA Cup Winners 2013, sounds good that

“From August 1 this ground is going to be called the DW Stadium and I am placing the ownership into the hands of Wigan Athletic. That will take place over the next four to six weeks.”

obviously there is the argument of what Whelan says and what Whelan does ;)
29 August 2009 at 4:22 am #7248ApologiesI hadn’t seen that as it was posted when I was away on holiday. But as you say what Whelan says and what he does are sometimes two different things.
The six weeks has well passed.
Another query cleared up by the CL.
