Being a captain in a cricket team & being a captain in a football team are 2 completely different things.
In cricket they are much more involved in team selection, deciding the order of batting, deciding where to put fielders & when, when to have “power plays” in ODI, what bowlers to put on and when depedning on weather conditions, pitch conditions, batters they’re up against.
In football they are little more than a figurehead. I remember Peter Atherton getting appointed captain at Latics at a very young age & people saying he was too young but he took it in his stride & if anything it helped develop him as a player – although I acknowledge that it was at a much lower level
A captain in football needs to be someone the other players look up to in terms of application, effort & skill. Experience can also help but I don’t think its essential – it shouldn’t (IMO) be gaff laden players like Gary Caldwell & Alcaraz.
If he stays I’d give it to Al Habsi although giving it to McCarthy if we stay up might encourage him to stay
your right about cricket captain/football captain, I was just making the point that it’s extra pressure on a player who doesn’t need that pressure atm, just leave him to do what he is doing atm I say. I think we should consider giving it to Ali NOW actually, as that might convince him to stay hopefully
i dont think its actually Ali’s decision of whether he stays or not. So dont think that should be a reason for offering captaincy.
McCarthy for me is the best option. I dont personally rate Alcarez as a player so dont think he would do a good job as captain. considering the hype when we signed him, he has been slightly disappointing. lacking pace, no leadership qualities, easy beatable in the air. positionally not bad, but again pace lets him down.
only my opinion, so please dont start shouting at me. I have had a long day today.

Seriously, you think that of Alcaraz? I think he’s a decent centre half, but as you said, it’s all opinion.
When he isn’t there, the manager has chosen recently to give it to N’Zogbia. Strange decision in my mind, but I don’t personally know and/or work with the players on a day to day basis. If ONLY we had someone in a position of authority who did.
As for McCarthy, just let him play football. He doesn’t need to be burdened with the captaincy and we don’t need him to have it.

Fair comment there Griff…..we do have a club captain in Gary Caldwell – there is no need, in my humble opinion, to start chopping and changing as ‘the wind blows’…..this is not Egypt – people power or fans force will not work. I’ve never been so embarassed as after watching an England (friendly) game when, after all the usual substitutions, there had been twelve captains on the night (alright that was an exageration but those who saw the game will remember that farce).
Have a plan and stick to it (old military adage) – awaits the ‘Galipoli’ brigade retorts (I’m ready).
Further, again my opinion but one maybe shared by the musicians among us, our bands, guitar hero’s, Brian Ferry’s, David Bowie’s, Deep Purples and Black Sabbaths were all older than we were – or else we wouldn’t have listened………
It would be like asking Justin Bieber to host the NME awards and be taken seriosly by his peers – great at what he does, however……………
ps….Griff, just a quick ‘off topic’ question – How did VAT know that you were at a meeting (Let’s beat these horrible Redmen thread, page 2, Vat @ 5:49pm) when you hadn’t mentioned it at all previously in your ‘conversation’…….as you also confirmed that you had on (a 45 minuter) just after.
Micky – to be fair to VAT (not sure why) I think I recall telling him he had time to think up a decent response to my latest post as I was off to a meeting.
He then went all toilet and (even more) childish on me.
Have you been watching Police Academy films?
I’m sure McCarthy would be a great captain when he’s older, but he’s still a big young in my opinion.[/quote]
to use an old cliche what the hell does it matter how old you are, reckon he would make a great leader.   also, boyce is a must start for me,seems to have added rampaging runs in to the box to his game to!!
I’m going to echo the general feeling in this thread and agree that McCarthy is too young. Age does matter. With age comes experience and maturity. These are two things we need our Captain to have, especially given our current league posistion.
I’d love to see McCarthy captaining the club in a couple of years time.

I didn’t even mention Caldwell! I’m not sure who I’d like to see as captain. I don’t think McCarthy’s ready though!
