26 May 2011 at 3:06 pm #66696A very good read Griff. As an ex-journalist I suggest you do a bit more writing in your spare time as you write very well.
Very kind of you to say so. I love the writing. As bizarre as it may sound given the amount of posting I do on this forum, the ‘spare time’ is the issue. However, as is patently obvious from some of the activity on here, any old fool can post the odd one-liner or paragraph or two. Proper writing takes a bit more time and effort, as I’m sure you will clearly appreciate, given your past.

There are a few pensive looks going on around that table.

I think most were trying to work out what “galvanise” meant.Very clever ploy by the club to put a sombrero in front of Roberto’ place so that the JCLs among us knew which one was him.

It was needed I suppose. Because of the desks you can’t see which one was wearing brown shoes.26 May 2011 at 5:42 pm #66708Well written, i’ll have to make the wife read it, she’s of the dark side pursuation. All last season we had fights over Roberto, her view was (at the start o fthe season) that we needed rid. In fact we had more rows about RM this year than all other subjects put to together.
We also did very few away games becuase she didn’t want to waste money and time on them. At the end of the Stoke game (watching from home) she said, all happy, “we should do more away games next season!”
I wonder whether she’ll remember that statement. On the comment re the West Ham game, the folllowing day I had a salesman in, he was from Warrington and a man u fan but he had had £10 tickets for the game (part of a community effort with school boy teams) so he a 40 dads and 60 lads went. He couldn’t stop talking about the game and said if we stayed up he was goingto get a season ticket for him and his lad. Maybe it was talk, but it can only be positive stuff.

More like a few big bellies!
27 May 2011 at 9:38 am #66741Translation. ” I have aspirations to be a professional writer and you and I are in the know as part of the inner circle of Cockneylatic who have occasional access to officialdom at the club and as a result will never bite the hand that feeds us unlike the great unwashed on here who don’t know any better. Now please bend over”.
Seriously the article was an enjoyable read but I didn’t even see any constructive criticism about what has been mainly a dark depressing and frustrating season. There was no ” do you not think with the squad we had we could’ve done better? ” “How do you think we can increase attendances?” “Some of our signings have been a disaster”.
The season did end on a very happy note, but as a very occasional poster and according to our serious writers having only a limited vocabulary the word ‘sycophants’ did spring to mind.

I can’t speak for SwindonLatic but I can assure you the only useful access I have to club officialdom is that I used to lose the odd 5-a-side football match with Stuart Hayton, but even he avoids me now. But thanks for guessing and getting it completely wrong.

I obviously didn’t quote the whole 80 minutes verbatim, and picked out what I believed to be of most interest (mainly the questions I asked  ). That said, with reference to the crowds bit didn’t you read the “Where are yer…?” section? The season did end on a very happy note, but as a very occasional poster and according to our serious writers having only a limited vocabulary the word ‘sycophants’ did spring to mind.
Nice word that, sycophants. Did you think it up all by yourself, or did you pluck out of the final section of my article? I guess you must have done the former because, by now, I’m beginning to think you haven’t read the article very carefully at all.27 May 2011 at 11:13 am #66745Thanks for the retort. I did skim the article and did not digest it as much as I should’ve. It was well written and elegant in style but came across as a review of an expensive restaurant where you’d had a free meal or was best mates with the owner rather than an interview with a football clubs officials. Roberto did a good job keeping us up and I concede his toenail knows more about the game than I do but all is not rosy at the club, and you and the other writers came across as though you were grateful to be there.
For the record I am reasonably well read and enjoy books including yours. I did not need to google the polite word I used for ‘arse lickers’, which I know is a bit harsh but which I meant more of a joke than with malice or intent to offend greatly.

That’s as maybe, but you have to concede that it totally loses its impact given that I had not only already used that word in the article but also accused myself of being one to boot.If you’re going to nit-pick, at least have the good grace to read properly the bit you’re pulling to bits.
And, there was no offence taken; I’m sure you have realised over the years of reading my drivel on here that my supreme arrogance means that – apart from my wife, mum and dad – I don’t give a flyer for what anyone else thinks or says about me.
Enjoy your weekend.
27 May 2011 at 6:45 pm #66787I’ll have to remember that :hand: :teasing-blah:
FA Cup Winners 2013, sounds good that
