i work in a factory with a few polish people and they are nice people and good workers, but a few years ago the management started threatening people with there jobs if they didnt increase their production and work longer hours. the phrase they used was ” we’ll replace you with a czech” and gradually they started taking on slovakians who were just dirty gypos. eventually they had a second shift to themselves, but several lost orders and as many lost fingers later they began to realise that they had dropped a huge bollock and one by one they were fired off. they were only here to earn money to send back home while claiming benifit for themselves. so the moral probably is there are some decent workers who just want to earn a living but also some rogues who are just here for the benifits. if it was up to me i would send the lot of em home

You will probably find that these migrant workers have filled the void left by the work shy unemployed who refuse to see any benefit (no pun intended) in taking a job and no matter what the governments try to do will more than likely find an excuse. In an ideal world we will see the young coming into the job market and taking these jobs.

Whilst sharing your views on the workshy younguns it is unfair to tar them all with the same brush many younguns can’t find jobs especially round the Wigan area with places shutting left ,right and center there is also an unbalanced view to the labour market with many older folk working past there retirement age thus taking a big chunk of the jobs that should be available to the younger end .

A lot of firms don’t bother to write back to you anymore even if you apply for a job these days ,Maybe we should of kept the coal mines open and steelworks which a certain bitter old bag shut down putting thousands out of work and actually being encouraged to go on the sick by that government of the time which then sprouted a generation of layabouts that we see today

I cant remember the union leaders name but when asked about the workshy not willing to do the jobs immigrants would do he replied it’s because the pay is poor for the work that’s required. Pay a reasonable wage and you have no problem filling the vacancies, the immigrant workers can make up to 10 times the money here than at home, and this is the problem a British worker on national minimum wage is a poor wage, an immigrant on the same wage is earning a great wage, they don’t mind living in a cramped flat for 12 months knowing they’ll be going home with a good wedge.

Unfortunately the previous government seemed to be more than happy to let people waste away on benefits while importing cheap labour by the millions. The office of national statistics say if immigration is set to continue at its present rate we will touch 66 million in 2020, that will be a huge burden on resources and will effect us all.

You have to give credit when someone is willing to go overseas to find work, don’t think I fancy it, but then again if I can earn 5 or 10 times my current wage!

the immigrant workers can make up to 10 times the money here than at home,

          Ten times

Nonsense – particularly if you add the costs of living here to the money “sent home”

          Prices in Poland in GBP

I was talking about wages in general, if memory serves me right and I wont google it the polish can expect 5 times the wage they could receive back home, And I was talking about immigration in general not the polish. But seeing as your talking about the Polish several months ago I was doing a job for a polish woman and I asked her did she like Wigan her reply was ” I like the money” I kid you not.

My post was not intended to be a dig at immigrant workers, fair play to them they are trying to improve their lot in life.

Hang on a minute…Wigan’s not exactly Monte Carlo is it? Most Wiganers would come back with the same answer! What would you expect? ‘Yes, I love it. Much better than the picturesque port of Gdansk that I come from.’

I was working in Poland during the summer and three of the people I worked with are coming back to the UK and hope to stay here.

They like the way of life, the sense of humour etc.

          #95298

What do you mean not exactly Monte Carlo, you’ve not been to Crooke hall recently!

I’d be a hypocrit to be against it because I have worked a lot in other countries and think it’s great that anybody can go anywhere in Europe to work for a while.

Time for the really controversial comment that a few people are really going to hate, but if you have knuckled down and become really good in your field of work, you wouldn’t worry about anybody else taking your job, be it English, Polish, robots or them little green buggers from Mars. The country as a whole has been far too lapse in recent years thinking that we will be prosperous because we have been for centuries. Unfortunately, times are changing and other countries are fast catching up to us and overtaking us. Unfortunately, it’s often far too easy to blame everybody else but ourselves when we don’t get what we want from life.

          Let the abuse begin…

Totally agree with that. No abuse from me.

In fact, I moved from Wigan over 20 years ago to live and work in the South East. Why? More money…lots more money. The only difference between me and those discussed on here is distance.

I also have to explode the myth about older workers taking jobs from youngsters. Sorry Thrityfive, but ask any economist and they will tell you it’s completely false. An old person in work is contributing to the eceonomy, spending mponey that gives rise to other jobs and paying taxes. An old person out of work contributes nothing in taxes and might also need to claim housing benefit, etc.

I’m in total agreement with you.

My argument on the last thread was with people presuming Eastern European are coming to the UK to sponge off society, when in actual fact a vast majority of them are coming here to work, and work bloody on the whole, to earn money.
You can’t compete with someone who wants to work bloody goodpost
Of course, I was referring to butchers…
Good save ;)

I don’t have a problem with the Eastern block migrants coming over and working because as Standish says, They DO work very hard. I have a problem with Middle-Eastern migrants coming over though. The majority are scroungers and i detest their religious beliefs and teh sly way the look at our women.

The overall problem is that the amount of immigrants allowed in is just far to many.

            I shouldn’t, but I actually laughed at that. ;)

Thty i can’t believe i am going to say this but i agree with you 5000%. I couldn’t be in agreement more.

Look what they did to me in the 80’s, I was asking every bugger for a job ;) ;)

Seriously, I do agree with everything you say. I have been saying the same stuff for a long long time.

You’re right, they can’t get THAT job, but they can get other jobs created from the money spent by the working older person, or from the taxes paid by the older person.

Although I have to confess that I only got a D in my economics A level

The above I took from a recent TV programme that put retired people back to work. One topic that came up time and again was that old people still working are blocking jobs for youngsters. They asked a few economists who all said it was basically bollocks.
