I have been looking back over some of the post’s in forum and see the term ‘Must win game’ being chucked about a lot.
Can somebody please explain to me why games such as Southampton last week, and away to Reading on the 23rd are ‘Must Win’?
In my eyes, the term ‘Must Win’ is acceptable to use on the final day of the season, needing 3 points to survive. Over the last 4 seasons fans have continued to say ‘this is a must win’, and despite losing the supposed ‘Must Win Game’, we have still managed to survive.
It angers me that people use this term so much, and criticise Roberto for saying comments such as ‘It’s another vital point’.
In my Opinion, there no point identifying games with such a big stake, when to be honest, if we do loose, it’s not a big deal. Yes, I agree that it is important to pick up points now, instead of the last 4 games of the season, but we have all seen Wigan turn it around from here, and I fully believe that will again do it this season.
Has anybody else got a view about this? And what is your definition of a ‘MUST WIN GAME?’
Although I agree with you in some ways there’s also an argument for both sides.
Southampton at home is classed by some as a must win because if we had lost the game they’d have been 6 points ahead of us with a better goal difference. In the end, a point is an okay result as we’ve taken 4 off them this season and we’re still just 3 points behind them. I would have classed the game as a must NOT lose rather than a must win.
In terms of losing the games against the teams around us your always looking up when we need to be looking down. For example, if we had lost to Southampton it would have meant we’d need to win 3 more games than them to finish above them so to speak.
I am suspecting that Adam is a little green behind the ears. I could of course be wrong as I often am but to question the proverbial ‘Must Win’ scenario is a little naive is it not ?
Just to quote you Adam on the Chelsea Away thread “Appreciate that it is expensive, but at a time like this when Chelsea are playing badly, and we need a win, It’s got to be worth considering at least?, Living in Dorset costs me £52 a time for the train to a home game, but I don’t let that put me off”.
To repeat ” We need a win ” The question is- Is it a must win if we really need it ? ;)

I believe there is a BIG difference between ‘need a win’, and ‘Must Win Game’,
Do you not agree?
‘Need a win’ in my eye’s suggests that it would ease pressure, and help momentum.
‘Must Win’ to me if you don’t win, There will be a major consequence, for example, Relegation.
I see where you are coming from, but I believe they are 2 totally different things.

That’s a very good point.

Give over man, you’ll be saying there’s no such thing as a 6-pointer next. ;)
right then, the premier league usually consists of three mini leagues. the teams at the top trying to win the thing or get into europe, the teams in the middle who are probably not good enough to get into europe but not in a relegation fight either and those teams at the botton trying to avoid the drop. we happen to be in the latter so we have to be looking at beating the teams around us. these games are must win games for us. when we play teams who are mid table they are deffinately winnable games or games we should be picking points up from. when we play the top teams we dont expect to win and any points picked up is a bonus. and if it was that simple WE WOULDNT BE IN THIS BLOODY MESS WOULD WE.

We have lost to teams around us though and we are still fighting to survive, how do you consider it as a ‘must win’ game if we are not relegated?
It hasn’t to be taken literally just like football hasn’t to be taken too seriously ! On saying that, needs must I suppose ! :cheer:
I’m sorry, but I will not listen to that. I admit sometimes I wonder why I spend so much time and money following Wigan, But never have I thought football shouldn’t be taken seriously.
You can call me sad, But I love Wigan, and Football in general.I spend lots of my time either watching or playing it, and best of all, Its a valid reason to go out and have a drink with the lads!

I think that what Phil is saying is that the phrase “must win game” is just a figure of speech. Why are you so het up about it?
I’d say it was pretty simple really. If you’re playing against a team you know you will be competing with at the end of the season then a game against them is usually ‘must win’ for the simple fact it means they get 0 points and you get 3. Yes there are another 36 games to go and you could lose and still survive, but at the start of the season when you plan your season you will mark that game as ‘must win’.
On the other side of the coin, Man Utd would see games against the lesser clubs as ‘must win’ otherwise they’ll fail to win the title. What they get off the sides around them is a bonus. If they were to drop points against the lesser sides, then their games against Man City and the like would become ‘must win’. IE – City will see their trip to OT as ‘must win’.
