Yip, good 3 points and was really impressed with Hendry Thomas, MOM by a long way. Now then, Bob, take note pls
1. Charlie says . . .play me on the left as i’m left footed – much better there when koumas went off.
2. Koumas says . . play me in the hole behind Hugo as I am quicker physically & mentally than Gomez.
3. Gomez says . . I am eternally gratefull that I keep my place and that I have a free role. I can keep losing the ball and fall over as long as we have a back line of six behind me, and Hugo wandering when I will create something for him.
4. Hugo says . . .Can I have a strike partner or at least someone who can create something, or someone like Sinclair with pace to get around me for the 2nd ball.
5. Sinclair says. . . 5 minutes ????? your avin a tin bath, only 90 mins too late.13 September 2009 at 1:31 pm #8646I totally agree with everthing you say. We scored from a cross from a right footed play crossing from the right. Fancy that.
He must see that Gomez is awful just doesn’t give us anything going forward.

The only other thing to add would be Kirkland saying……’please don’t pass it back to me, I am far too hesitant and can’t kick for toffee.13 September 2009 at 1:45 pm #8648I actually thought Gomez had a fairly decent game.
He drew 2 or 3 saves from Green, and he never shy’s away from wanting the ball.
I think people need to get off his back.

sorry but he is far too slow. How many things did he create ??? He is supposed to be our cutting edge, yet is blunter than blunt Blunt McBlunt from Bluntsville. AND if I had a free role then I’m sure I could have 3 shots on target in 90 mins play

I agree with that. He needs time and looks short on confidence.
Unfortunately, if you don’t chase lost causes and put yourself about a bit our fans will give you stick. Jeff Wright comes to mind.
Overall I thought we played well. Martinez has clearly got his messgae across about passing the ball about, but the team are still developing this new style of play. We need more movement off the ball. Most of the backwards passing was because the player in possession didn’t have options to go forwards as players were too static.
The worry, for me, is at the back. The casual attitude and hesitancy will cost us. It seemed that there was a lack of communication with no-one trying to boss things. Kirkland, Bramble and Boyce should be the ones to do this, especialy Kirkland.
13 September 2009 at 11:22 pm #8674I think you have got Thomas mixed up with Diame stmatts. Diame was the player who ran over every blade of grass on the pitch, put some great passes in, showed he had some trickery in his armoury, polaxed parker with a superb timed tackle and broke down play at every opportunity, drove forward when he could and hardly missed a header.
Thomas was the one hanging around the centere circle for most of the game looking to go sideways and backwards all the time. Did a job mind you, but MOM?, you have definitely got a touch of the mistaken identities mate. From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!13 September 2009 at 11:24 pm #8675The midfiedl looked good. Thomas and Diame are bot impressive and Gomez will get there. If they can get some support for Hugo all will be well.
Do some of you actually want them to be winning or do you get off on their faults ?13 September 2009 at 11:27 pm #8677Thomas was my Man of the Match as well.
14 September 2009 at 12:27 am #8685Thomas-Defensive Midfield “Rock”. Sit’s in front of back four and picks ball up of them.
Diame- Energetic battling midfielder, good at getting a tackle or a leg in and winning the ball. Can also distribute it wisely.
Gomez- A touch of class on the ball. Job is to look for creative openings, and link up in attacks.
When you look at it like that, you can see exactly where Roberto is coming from with his midfield. It performed very well yesterday.

Correct em if I’m wrong, but wasn’t it N’Zogbia’s work on the right (winning the ball, beating another man & then playing in a great pass behind the defence) that put melchiot in to play teh cross that led to the goal?
Fair does if I’m wrong, I’ve only seen the highlights & I was drunk/hungover at the time14 September 2009 at 1:28 pm #8694I actually thought Gomez had a fairly decent game.

not slow in movement but slow thinking, you have no time to stop and play the ball thinking players will stand off, modern prem players move quicker than you think and close you down quicker ,it will take time to adjust but i think he has the ability.14 September 2009 at 2:09 pm #8697Or perhaps there was a reason why a low achieving top division spanish side (pretty similar to ourselves in that respect) wanted shut of him
14 September 2009 at 2:13 pm #8698He’s still getting used to the pace of the Premiership.
And I for one, think he is improving.
Don’t forget, we didn’t exactly play against any top-quality sides over the summer, did we?
I think that next summer, we should go for a ‘glamour’ friendly, somebody like Valencia, Villareal, or if we could swing it…..Barca or Real.*** Or if not a Spanish team, anothwer quality European side, such as Ajax, or someone.
I’ve always felt that you can learn a lot more from playing a top quality side and getting done 4-0, rather than beating some average side, 2-0 at a stroll. I definitely think that had we played a more quality side in the summer, we’d possibly be used to playing at a quicker pace. No disrespect to them, but PNE, Crewe, Norwich, St Mirren, and a couple of no-mark teams in Austria were not good enough, in terms of getting us used to a high paced game, against quality players.***Don’t mock. They played Shamrock Rovers in Dublin, so why not?
14 September 2009 at 3:49 pm #8702the vast, vast majority of pre-season friendlies are played at a snails pace anyway (regardless of who is involved) so IMO I don’t think it makes much difference at all (regarding helping a player adjust to the speed of the prem) who you are playing so long as it aint a team from the south lancs counties or somet
As for playing a glamour team like Barcelona or Real Madrid – these clubs charge an absolute fortune for you to play them. lower level clubs will pay it & know their fans will fork out over the odds to see their team play a glamour club. Latics can’t get a full home end when they charge £25 for a league game against United so i can’t see em getting enough in for a friendly & so they’d lose money.
If Latcis budget is restricted there are more important things I’d want em to spend their money on -
