Is he going to get the same levels of abuse as James McClean?
6 November 2018 at 12:05 am #172944Yes he should. NATO forces acted in reaction to the Serbian facists racism and genocide in Kosovo.
James had his own reasons as have been documented every year, like them or loathe them but at the end of the day many servicemen gave him the right to exercise his freedom of speech with the ultimate price.6 November 2018 at 1:10 pm #172949Yes he should. Do you not see the contradiction in your comment i.e. ‘give him the right to exercise his freedom of speech….’ and then trying to get the hordes to abuse him for doing just that. Players like Matic and McClean shouldn’t even have to explain their reasons. Sick of listening to this poppy fascism shite every year
And where were your heroes of NATO and the UN at Srebenica? Yes just sat by and witnessed a genocide.
Keep this forum to football.
6 November 2018 at 2:11 pm #172950Yes he should get the same level of abuse as James McLean. But only because James McLean shouldn’t get any. Nobody should. It’s a free country with free speech supposedly. But it will be interesting to see if he’s treated any differently.

What is Poppy Fascism?[/quote]Poppy fascism? In simple terms denying someone (or in your case advocating abusing someone) their right of self expression or freedom of choice, a basic principle of democracy.
6 November 2018 at 6:40 pm #172954Personally I don’t think we should link the 2 together. The Irish struggles are totally unique and separate from any other war fought. Lets not compare heroism with terrorism.
6 November 2018 at 7:00 pm #172955One person’s hero is another person’s terrorist, it’s a very fine line.

So are the two sportsmen in question not making political gestures? Simply by doing that they are opening themselves up to abuse in the sporting arena rightly or wrongly but especially so on such an emotive subject and whilst they use that arena to get their point over. They could simply refuse to play and avoid wearing the poppy in that way.

Yes they could but if the politics wasn’t there in the first place that wouldn’t be necessary.

Absolutely but it inevitably does
6 November 2018 at 9:38 pm #172962No one is obliged to wear a poppy. If they don’t wear one they aren’t obliged to explain themselves.
By now we should know the reasons these guys don’t wear poppies, McClean has explained clearly enough times. No one has to respect what he say, but we should all understand it by now. It would be great if we could accept it by now. The abuse McClean says he gets is not acceptable.
Like it or not, accept it or not, respect it or not ….. I wear a poppy …. a white one. Please don’t abuse me for it.

I have no problem with you wearing a white poppy or indeed a red one. I’d hope you have no problem with me not wearing one or not having to explain myself for not wearing one.
I think this would be a fitting end to this discussion??

No problem at all; it is fine by me. Totally fine. I have a respect for you, it’s ok. Sincerely none of my comment was aimed at you. I agree with what you say.
