I think the Egyptians built the Pyramids quicker. I seem to remember it was first mentioned around about the time Martinez nearly left for Villa. 5 years ago? Something also appeared on the Website 12 months ago with some cheap 3D images using Google Sketchup.
This would be a good test of Mr Whelans continued commitment to this football club if he was to press ahead with these infrustructure plans.
But i suspect these plans have now been thrown out of the door along with all other costly assets. We’ve more chance of seeing new homes on Chorley Golf Course rather than football pitches.
12 February 2015 at 6:25 pm #139442As far as I know the plans are going ahead – it does take an inordinate time to get the various approvals – without any issues of newts or anything else that will be used to provide opposition.
12 February 2015 at 6:51 pm #139446The club stated on the official website last year that the project had received “Planning Approval” from Chorley Borough Council. They were waiting for the Secretey of State to rubber stamp it. The SoS had 21 days following Chorley Councils decision. I assume it was rubber stamped.
A question for our Chief Exec at the next Forum perhaps?
There appears to be this huge cost cutting exercise going on at our club at the moment. Spend hundreds of thousands (possible millions) on a new training complex doesn’t appear to be in keeping with the clubs short to medium term plans?
I suspect this project will be put on the back burner for the time being.
12 February 2015 at 7:12 pm #139447Was reliant on us being in the PL I believe.
12 February 2015 at 8:56 pm #139452More spin to keep the (then) manager Martinez. Although it should have already been budgeted for or even paid for in principle, I bet you any money you want this will not happen. The blame will be, ‘Well we couldn’t stay in the Prem so we can’t afford it now, It’s the fans’ fault for not putting an extra 6,000 bums on seats and that extra 2m a year or so from that would have paid for it all’
“I am putting wheels in motion to ensure Wigan Athletic is looked after in the future”
12 February 2015 at 9:11 pm #139456More chance of Raising the TITANIC.
12 February 2015 at 9:16 pm #139457Still going ahead according to JJ in the Observer a few week back
12 February 2015 at 9:43 pm #139458Dont be surprised if there ends up with new houses being buit on it.Just like Springy Park. ;)
12 February 2015 at 10:58 pm #139460Let’s just bookmark this post, shall we, and see?
13 February 2015 at 3:04 am #139470Would make sense regardless we have two parachute payments left and we will need a good youth policy in the future for our return spell in the lower divisions.
it will save and generate money in the long run and the impoverished set up of the early eighties had a very good youth policy David Glen,Kevin Langley,Warren Aspinall, David Lowe,Wayne Aspinall,Andy Ainscow being just some of the names that came through the ranks and some of these names were sold for big money.
The new money in the premier will mean less and less chances for kids in the future so they may as well start at Wigan as the net for foreign players will widen as the new wealth hits.
On the subject of the new pay deal talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time, just hoping Blunderland will miss out.14 May 2015 at 6:08 pm #142197A lot has happened at the club in the 3 months since I posted this.
Unfortunately nothing as happened with the new academy/training ground.
The clubs target of it being “operational by August 2016” is looking unlikely unless they start soon. Planning Permission was granted in October last year.
I’ve heard/read nothing from our New Chairman regarding this project. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
14 May 2015 at 9:13 pm #142200The Council raised no objections in the latter part of the year, and it was therefore approved subject to Secretary of State approval, which would take about a month further on. There were some issues about newts but I think the club have got beyond that.
It is now May. About 5-6 months further on. Have you ever tried to get a major building operation put into place? Things need to be arranged that couldn’t be until planning permission had been agreed.
Maybe August 2016 is optimistic, I don’t know, but as far as I am aware the plans have not been shelved.
15 May 2015 at 12:02 am #142201Call me cynical but I don’t reckon anything will be done while we are in League One if at all!
15 May 2015 at 1:46 am #14220515 May 2015 at 4:43 am #142209Thanks, Roy. I thought he had said that – but I couldn’t find it.
