Can anyone who attended the fans forum confirm exactly what young Sharpy said about the new training ground and academy? I’ve read and heard different versions of his comments.

The below quote from Sharpe is only 3 months old.

“We will also continue to prioritise plans to build a first class academy and training ground, where the club can start developing its own players to feature at first team level more regularly”

Is he now saying the project is shelved? What a shock.

Quote- “Sharpe also passed comment on the new academy at Charnock Richard, he said that it will cost £18 million and as a League 1 club it isn’t viable at the moment but planning permission has been granted and it is a future project, he said it is something that should have been done when we were in the Premier League”.

Well I for one knew this was always going to be a no go! New housing estate perhaps? ;)

Houses or sit on it for a few years after a few attempts to change the plans to housing. Then as allways Chorley B.C. will give in to the big rich man because the site will have become an eyesore and expensive houses will be even more expensive and the original investment will be turned into a massive profit. Seems strange that there was money available for this project but not for Jordan Rhodes etc when an investment in a proven striker two years ago could have given us a quick return to the Premier and therefore the Charnock Site being developed. To the football club the investment in Charnock Richard as been about as usefull as the investment in Riera Delort Holt and co. Charnock Richard as not seen much football yet and us as fans didn’t exactly see much football out of those three either.

Yet again some of us less positive/optimistic posters have been bang on the nail with our preconceptions of doom and gloom! ;) From what I have seen in the transfer activity so far isn’t much better news either!

            What nonsense.

The training ground has been in the planning since Martinez came back to the club. It was the dangling carrot that kept him here, and Whelan had even gone to the trouble of visiting other Premier League clubs’ training grounds to see how they’d done it.

It’s obvious the club needs one to attract players and develop its own academy players. It’s a long term investment – much more so than selling to a developer for a couple of million.

The problem is though, the club didn’t plan for 2 relegations, and the yearly income has dropped from £40 million-ish, to – once the parachute payments have gone – f’ck all.

The training ground will happen if we get promoted, they just need to allocate what little money they have elsewhere at the moment. If we don’t get promoted in the next few seasons, yes, then it may end up being sold on.

As for Jordan Rhodes: Blackburn were never going to sell to one of their rivals, and came out in the media to say as much. The guide-price for Charnock Richard GC when it went on sale was around £600k (not exactly a bank-breaking amount) and it had already been bought before Owen Coyle was given the job and the Jordan Rhodes rumour appeared.

And as for the proven goalscorer – that’s what we thought we were getting when we signed Grant Holt!
