What you say makes no sense at all. If I was a manager tracking a player from a different club and his performances were poor and he wasn’t trying/playing well I would soon end my interest in him as it would surely mean he isn’t good enough, right?

So, if other clubs keeping tabs on our players means they will just give up playing for us and not put in a shift then i’m sorry but they’ll end up missing out on the move they wanted because what manager (in the right mind) would sign a player who isn’t playing well?

N’Zogbia has been our best player for most of the season but has looked quite poor in our last 2 games (Bolton and Villa) and is now ‘injured’. If he doesn’t want to be here then sell him, simple.

McCarthy is still a kid, he’s shown his potential and Roberto has worked wonders with him, slowly introducing him into the team. We have to try out best to keep this lad.

Hugo isn’t worth what Villa are rumoured to be paying so that’s good business.

Figueroa has just signed a new contract so, looks like he’ll be staying but if not, I don’t rate him all that highly anyway so it wouldn’t be a major loss in my opinion.

Kirkland, for me is crap! If we get £5m from Sunderland for him i’ll drive him and help him move house!

Scharner is out of contract in the summer, if he chooses to go fair play, he’s done well here and has seen his contract out and I for one would wish him well but hope he stays, good squad player.

but on the other hand if certain players know they are moving in the summer why should they be arsed here ;)

Sorry Alex but why are you not bothered about players being sold? Last year up to the January sales we should have walked into Europe then after we hardly won a game. Have you not learned that we sell players to other clubs for a big profit then we replace them with poorer (in most cases) cheaper options. We will get found out if not this season eventually and all your apathy towards player sales will come back and bite you. If all the players are sold that you mentioned and we pull in say 30 million how much do you think the manager will get to spend?

I for one don’t want to be watchin Swansea cast off’s Athletic next year thank you very much. Lets try and keep our players as most of them owe Wigan a huge debt of gratitude for the privilleged life style they now enjoy.

I agree with parts of what you say Hindley but I live in the real world and I know that out of the 6 players mentioned in this thread 3, 4 or maybe 5 of them will leave in the summer. I am not opening the door for all our best players to leave, I would love to see all our better players stay at the club but 4 of our better players over the last few seasons are now at other clubs (Palacios, Cattermole, Heskey and Valencia). I know what you’re saying is true regarding how much we invest in new players but that’s life and the fact remains (as a fan) if you have a player who doesn’t want to play for your club then you show him the door. What would the likes of you and I give to play for Wigan Athletic? I feel Whelan has waited for who he believes is the right man to take our club forward. He has openly admitted he believes Roberto is that man so hopefully Whelan will give him the cash he needs to sign the right players. You must remember Whelan wants us in Europe and he must know that involves spending. At the begining of the season Europe was a 3 year plan for Bob and Dave, keep the faith!

Maybe clubs will want to buy players who will chase the lost cause, rather than those who give up when all doesnt look well. Thus increasing their worth to the club..!

It is in the players best interest to make the most of things.

                    Hindley

If this club doesn’t sell players, it can’t afford to play in the Premier League anyway, as there isn’t the income from other revenue streams (including TV rights) to sustain the club’s existence.

                    The options are:

Buy players on the cheap, sell them at over inflated prices a year or two down the line, and remain relatively debt free.

                    Or

Keep all the best players by constantly matching their wage demands, qualify for Europe, then start the following season with crippling debts.

Until Wigan Athletic play to forty thousand every week and have a worldwide fanbase, that’s the way it’s going to be.

The only flaw with that is that footballers are not always the brightest of sparks

I don’t know the figures involved but assuming that TV income is a minimum of 30M surely this easily covers the wages of 20 (good/promising) players averaging about 20 grand a week (= 20M/year) ?

But unfortunately, good/promising players at this level still cost £2-5 million each, so even if you manage to snap up some great prospects at the lower end, you’ll still have to find £40 million before you pay the wage. You also still need a bit of experience in there as well, so count on those wages being more than £20K a week.

You also have over 150 people working in and around the stadium, I would hazard a guess that 30 or so of those are full time. The manager, First team coach, Physio, Reserve coach, commercial manager, Secretary, CEO, groundsman etc all these added together wont be cheap.

The stadium still needs electric, gas, water, supplies etc….. the AGM was the other night, maybe someone who went can shed more light, but I would hazard a guess that right now, it cost £42+ million to run the club per year.

                      That’s not a bad estimate….

We’ve done this issue to death on several occasions, and here’s the Independent article that was published in February this year, which states about Wigan:

                      Wigan Athletic
                      Turnover: £46.3m
                      Operating profit: –£17.0m
                      Net debt: £54.0m
                      Interest payment: £1.5m

The club’s latest accounts make it plain that all that stands between Wigan and oblivion is Dave Whelan. The owner has put £39m into the club in the form of an unsecured, interest-free loan with no fixed repayment date. The club also has an overdraft and bank loan from Barclays of £18.7m, repayable on demand, on which Wigan paid £1.5m in interest in 08-09. The club ran at an operating loss of £17m in that year and the accounts note “further losses are anticipated in 2010 and 2011”.

But since then we have shifted a lot of players and the debt has been brought down, so that future transfer money can be invested into the club and new players! If my memory serves me correctly thats what roberto said at the fans forum!
