i supose you can look at it both ways if we buy and pay wages then we are asking for problems down the line, the other is if we dont then our crowds dive through lack of ambition ,and people get fed up of us being a selling club, which correct me if i am wrong we only just managed to get over 16,000 other night ,first season we averaged about 22,000 ,so something is keeping joe public away ,and if your reading this joe i did not mean you

But since then we have shifted a lot of players and the debt has been brought down, so that future transfer money can be invested into the club and new players! If my memory serves me correctly thats what roberto said at the fans forum!

I’m sure some of it can Landgate, but I don’t think we should be under any illusion that Martinez will start with a clean slate in the summer and have all the money from sales available to spend on new players.

      That’s not a bad estimate….
We’ve done this issue to death on several occasions, and here’s the Independent article that was published in February this year, which states about Wigan:
      Wigan Athletic
      Turnover: £46.3m
      Operating profit: –£17.0m
      Net debt: £54.0m
      Interest payment: £1.5m

On this basis, even if our crowds went from 18,000 to 25,000 = 7,000 @ 20.00 (average, incl kids) = 2.6M extra ticket income, then we would be some way short of breaking even

Strikes me that we (as a stepping-stone club) may be paying too much in wages.

There you go, and that from the club with allegedly the next to smallest wage bill in the league. It’s also the reason we sell good players and replace them from the cheaper end of the market but, whilst having a disappointing and frustrating season, are not staring at a 9 point deduction like Portsmouth.

Which is why the priority is to move on big earning players like Koumas, Kapo and Melchiot.

The wage bill is near £40m, whereas recently promoted Championship teams are spending £10m-£15m.

For a club like Latics our Premiership wage bill should be closer to £30m, then you’re looking at selling one player per season to break even.

Get close to breaking even and the club would be an easier sell for Whelan, which would be his only opportunity to recoup his £39m.

The accounts of many clubs, such as Fulham, Aston Villa and Wigan, show that they are beneficiaries of loans from their owners, or rather usually other companies which also belong to their benefactors. On the face of it, this type of financing looks safe and cheap as it tends to come with a very low interest rate (often zero) and no urgency on repayment. The owners of Chelsea and Manchester City have even written off their soft loans of £701m and £305m respectively in recent months, making these two clubs debt-free.

Are we actually having a sensible and balanced discussion on Cockney Latic?

        This can’t be right.

Whatever, I think you’re all a set of moaning pr@cks….

The fact that we will always be a selling club in this league is something fans will have to get used to. However, what we should always do is strive to get the best price and re-invest as much as possible in the squad while ensuring that the debt is at a managable level.

Bickymon talks about the crowd the other night and our average dropping from the first year. Of course, some of those gates in the first year were down to the novelty factor, but even last season when we were going for Europe, some of our gates were only around the 18-20k mark with decent away followings and the WHU game when we were 7th at the time (I think) only had 12,500 Wiganers on.

If the majority of Wigan wont get off its couch to watch the best team we’ve ever had at our prices, then what is Whelan supposed to do?

Well said Griff (Hurt me saying it ;) )…… But you are right… all these people are moaning but the true supporters would rather see us have a dodgy season like this, rather than trying to overspend and end up like Portsmouth.
