Whilst being disappointed that we were below par and rather off the ball today, at least we didn’t lose the game, when we easily could have.
We seemed to lack that sharpness, although playing a physical team such as Stoke was always going to be difficult. Our game most certainly changed when we lost the lively Beausajour. His replacement, David Jones, was a little rusty, and he doesn’t look capable of beating his man to get a ball into the box. So we lost a major avenue of supply of balls into the box. Perhaps Gomez may of been a better option?
Di Santo was industrious, in fact, the whole team were industrious, we just lacked that final bit needed to kill off Stoke. Whilst not being overly disappointed with the result, if we are going to kick on as a club at this level, these are the types of games where we must take three points.
A major plus point was the goal Di Santo scored, created by great pace and work by Kone. I think if we can get a few decent through balls putting him in on goal, most defenders won’t catch him. Also, the introduction of Ryo Miaychi (sic?) showed him to be very lively, and not too dissimilar to Ji Sung Park, in his United days. Definitely a player to put on and improve attacking options.
So we’ve dropped 2 points. Could’ve been all 3, whilst we could also have nicked it. Time for Roberto to assess today and work out where we need to improve ourselves.
I agree with you sayin we missed beasojour. But i dont think you can be to critical of jones as he is not a winger. I couldnt imagine gomez tracking back to help figs out. I dont no if its just me but mcarthur keeps us ticking over in midfield and the play seemed to slow when he went off. Overall if i was martinez i wud be happy with that performance
i enjoyed the game today although i think we should have come away with all three points. we dominated most of the game and their last goal was a soft un for me but overall not a bad performance, thought miyaichi did well when he came on, i would start him next game.

Positives
– Figs / Beausejour: quality on LHS (Jones ‘steady’, Beause. a big miss)
– Di Santo: 5 goals in last eight games
– Kone: much improved second-half performance
– Myaichi: very lively as Sub., impressed
– Al Habsi
– Didn’t lose the game
– Pushed for a winner to the end
Negatives
– Beausejour injury
– Inability to capitalise and put the game to bed at both 1-0 and 2-1
– Pace in defence (e.g. Ramis done in last 5 by Jerome – Ali to rescue)
– Disappointed not to see McManaman make the bench (Crusat ?!)
Next up (United)
– Beausejour and Alcaraz both back in (subject to fitness)
– Figueroa to start
– Tempted to start w/ Myiachi – pace/mobility/ball retention (Kone,sub)
I think you’re being a bit too critical Appley. First half vs Saints was a lot worse than anything today.
We started very well, had to compensate for Jean B going off and took control even when pegged back to 1-1. Di Santo’s goal was v classy.
It was always going to be very tough playing our game vs a barrage of route 1 – you just can’t legislate against those sorts of tactics, esp when you only play with 3 at the back.

Was Ronnie Stam on the bench? Would have made a better replacement.
I have to disagree with those who are pulling out negatives from that game, I thought we were immense. So far in the four games this season, with the exception of the first 6 minutes against Chelsea, we have looked sharp and dangerous, like a really well-drilled mid-table club on the upwards, which is exactly what we are looking for at Wigan.
Yes, we probably should have won the game with the amount of possession we had and the way Stoke played but I came away from watching the game applauding the rhythm and movement and flair of ‘little Wigan’. Kone and di Santo linked up fabulously, I can see a great strike partnership blossoming there. Maloney was pivotal to that attack, MacCarthur pulled the strings and drove the midfield, Figs and Jones played well in wing-back role as they always do and defensively, for once we looked coherent and strong. Ramis looks an excellent signing while Caldwell and Boyce continue to get the job done. Ali is a legend, always. But what was so fantastic was that we actually played as a team; the passing, the movement, it was so fluid, so crisp, so Martinez-esque, it was a joy to watch!
Yes, we should have won and maybe it can be considered 2 points dropped but seriously, if we continue to play like that this season, we will be absolutely no-where near the bottom.
Would like to see an injection in pace. Absent at Chelsea, didn’t see any improvement yesterday. Done by Jerome for pace until Ali, Caldwell (putting body on the line – similar required) saved the day.
Certainly, not up to playing LHS of defensive 3 (right footer, ltd pace)
Not anti-Ramis, but hope for / expect more ….. mobility, pace-wise.
Stoke – same tactics last year, we know what to expect..didn’t do too badly then. Clean sheet, 2-0 victory (Alcarez, Caldwell, Figueroa). Those three as a unit were pretty immense back end of last season, were they not ?

I dont think so egg. He could of maybe brought lopez on and pushed figs to lwb. But then you are jiggling about with the centre halves

Neither Lopez nor Stam were on the bench.

Of course he was done for pace by Jerome. That’s because Jerome is a very pacey player who is considerably quicker than Ramis, Caldwell, Alcaraz, and many other Premier League centre halves.
I’m sure it’s just your opinion, not fact, that Ramis is not up to playing ‘LHS’, but the common perception is that in a back three you don’t necessarily have to be the quickest if playing left or right of the three as you tend to have a man sweeping up behind you and a wingback as support.
Also, if I’m being picky, I can’t see why being a right footed player has any bearing as he plays to the left of Caldwell, but is still more or less up the middle. If he was playing leftback, then yes, you might have a point.
Personally I thought he had a decent game, looked solid and distributed well – which is pretty much what you ask for in a centre half.
