Hmmm, hard to say Griff, if money was no object Gianlucca Vialli, or M.O.N, but I wouldn’t mind one of Hoddle or Souness taking over, Souness only on a short-term basis mind.
Knowing us though we’d probably end up with Tony Adams or something.
I still think the un-spoken one will turn it around in time for the 2-0 defeat to Wolves. :D
Graeme Souness – i think he would be a great manager for us, and would stand absolutely, positively no shiote. He also lives in Knutsford so it is local enough for him.
Danny Wilson’s my shout too. He’s a Wiganer, and has done splendidly at Swindon with not a lot of money. The only concern is that his only top flight experience is taking Barnsley down, and getting sacked before giving Wednesday the same fate.
Curbishley always gets mentioned, but I don’t think he’s ever been north of the Watford Gap of his own volition.
Phil Brown?!!? I jest.
Paul Hart would be a serious candidate, but he’s never really achieved much other than instilling mediocrity at previously awful teams. He’s also managed about 42 clubs in the last fortnight.
Personally, I think we should just give Bobby the job back and let him get on with it. 8-)
Martin O’Neill*
Neil Warnock
Steve Coppell
Ian Holloway
Phil Brown
*Just as everybody else has said, we may as well offer it to him. I have very little hope that he would come to our club though – the City job will probably be available by January!
Well, he oversaw Charlton’s climb through the divisions including transition back to the Valley. Left them as a comfortable mid table club over numerous seasons, who have since shown how much he over achieved with them.
He then did a better job at West Ham than those immediately before or after him and left because he wasn’t perceived to be a big enough name for the new owners – great decision that. From what I heard, the few expensive and dodgy big name signings that were made there weren’t his.
I personally would welcome him with open arms as someone who knows how to get the best out of smaller clubs, and with the exception of O’Neill and possibly Jewell, he’s in a different class as a manager to the rest of the “realistic” names being touted e.g likes of Megson, Souness, Reid.
Personally, I think O’Neill is a pipe dream but it would be great if it could come off.
And are those of you who are suggesting the mouthy types like Warnock and Souness doing so partly because they would stand up to Whelan in terms of him releasing more funds or refraining from selling our best players? If so, I think you’d be sorely disappointed.
Hoddle was my footballing hero and I would love to see him here, but if you think you will see more 4-4-2 up and at ’em direct and dirty stuff with him, then you too will likely be disappointed. He’s another Martinez, albeit with a lot more knowledge, experience and a cockney accent. I’d take him any day of the week, but I don’t see it happening.
Of the more realistic ones, I prefer Danny Wilson over Paul Hart but the winner of the pint is Bolshy’s suggestion of Chris Coleman, mainly because it hadn’t even occurred to me. ;)
Good debate, and not a “f*** off yer nob” in sight.

Agree with you about Glen Hoddle. One of the best passers of a ball you could ever wish to see. Truth is, even as a player, he was years ahead of his time, technically. He learned a lot from playing under Wenger at Monaco as well. Never really cracked it as a manager at club level, though.
I do like the idea of Neil Warnock, as I think he is a genuine chap who calls ‘a spade a spade’, as they say. He wouldn’t try and bullsh*t people with lame excuses and over-technical assessments. And he knows how to get the best from his players. Plus, I think someone like him would be IDEAL for a club of our size and stature. Would he and Whelan clash? I don’t know. Both northerners, both passionate football men.
First choice, WOULD be Martin O’Neill. But whether or not we could get him here is another thing entirely.
Intrigued to note that not many of our dark side contingent seem to have any coherent thoughts on who should replace the “useless one” should they get their wish and he is sacked
If whelan WANTS to stay in the Prem then I suggest the following. Ask Bobby if he would like Paul jewell’s help. If he says no, then relieve him of his duties and give PJ the job until the end of the season.
But this must happen right now, ie today, to give PJ half a chance to do something before the window shuts.
I would love to give bobby miore time but it is clear that – for whatever reason – these players will not perform whilst he us in charge. Sad, but true I’m afraid

A very sensible post – even Martinez’s biggest fans can see there is no hope under him
