The Epsom Derby (The Derby Stakes)
Kentucky Derby

Derby County[/quote]A derby is a derby when it is deemed such by the Earl of Derby. Only two events have ever received such recognition. The derby that you refer too at Epsom and Wigan v St Helens.
The current Earl of Derby has confirmed that his family gave their name to only two sporting events; The Horse Race and the Rugby League match between St. Helens and local rivals Wigan.

I think the current Earl is on the board at Saints (or was) and whoever was Earl in 1989 was at Wembley for the cup final and was presented to the players pre-match before handing the cup over at the end.
Clare Balding referenced it in 2012 before our cup game on the beeb.
7 November 2014 at 3:27 pm #135068I’m going with 1.3 from the Oxford dictionary and probably about 99% of football fans up and down the country! As for the tit who changes his name annually, there is only one stupid fucker here and that is you!
