Seen on News Now that the Greed League are talking with the FA about a winter break. Why ffs!!! Because of this there will be further fixture congestion and it is proposed that replays will be scrapped for FA cup matches. A disgrace in my opinion to contemplate any further tinkering with the competition. Would much rather see no postponement of matches for international breaks unless clubs have players chosen for England’s senior squad.
Say no to mid winter breaks and another big no to scrapping FA Cup replays!!

Must admit can’t get worked up over that, there’s nowt worse than looking forward to games over the festive period, only to have them postponed due to the weather or become a farce due to the state of the pitch.
Also give a thought to our friends north of the border who 6-7 times out of 10, never see a game of footy from about mid December to end of January. :woohoo:

Scrapping the FA cup replays is not a bad idea either, it may lead to more giant killings with the smaller clubs who manage to hold a big club to a draw on their pitch, not having to go to their opponents ground for the inevitable slaughter, if they manage to win the even stevens pen shoot out. :cheer:

        From Matlock to ManU
        What a journey!

But for those small clubs a replay at a big ground can be a financial lifesaver

Greg Dyke and the FA have overseen the ruin of their own completion and these changes if they happen, would just about complete it.

In recent times we’ve seen FA Cup final replays gone, Semi-final replays gone, SF’s at Wembley, 5.30 kick offs, National Anthem not played when Cardiff got to the final and the biggest disgrace of all, other competitive football matches being played on the same day as the Final of the greatest domestic sporting knock-out completion on the planet.

FA have shown for years that they’re not fit to run their own competition and are just chasing the money. If the Champs League clubs don’t like the cup as it is, just don’t take part….should be as simple as that, let the clubs that care about the cup play it in.

A winter break would be a good idea, but the word “break” is key. I would expect every club to abide by that word and not jet off to play in some mini-tournament in the southern hemisphere, which is what will happen if it is not rigidly enforced.

Any player who plays in any overseas match during a break should automatically be banned for the length of the break upon recommencement of fixtures. So if Chelsea jet off to Australia and play a “friendly” during a 3 week break, everyone who plays will be banned from domestic games for 3 weeks from the cessation of the break.

Football or other sports on Boxing Day to me is what Boxing Day is about so I wouldn’t like to see a winter break but agree with the Makem that if one was brought in then players should not be off playing and posing abroad during the break period.
I remember second and third replays in all cups and the if a small club goes to a bigger club and gets a draw then they deserve their replay. The Premier League only play 38 games in a season which goes from August until May so is it not time they started to use their vast squads better in league games or play two games a week in August and September.

But clubs and players can’t take a break as they need to keep a certain level of fitness and condition.
Germany has quite a long winter break of around 5 weeks. Teams go to Dubai or other places for training camps and do end up playing friendly games.
I don’t think you can stop teams going for warm weather training during a winter breaks.

At the end of the day everything is now being designed to ensure that that the Champions League is the elite competition in Europe. It is only a matter of time before the Cup winners in the Major Nations get a CL spot. The big clubs who think they have a divine right to play in the CL will always get their own way eventually. If the season was planned out better there would be no need for a winter break. Make the close season shorter and maybe play a couple of rounds of the League cup in July or give the PL clubs an opt out option. I’m with mutt on this the massive clubs will just use the break as a global commercial exercise. If we ever lose the fourth CL spot just watch this space. Fear not Donny, to the majority of fans who support 90 odd percent of clubs in this country the Cup is still and will always be the greatest competition in the World.

I agree, and wouldn’t be opposed to any “behind closed doors” practice matches in warm weather places. In fact, just about every PL club who isn’t involved in the FA Cup or Europe has spent the last week in just such a camp.

However, I believe that unless it is stipulated that no matches where spectators can attend, then certain clubs will take advantage of any “break” and fit in a mid-season tour to go along with their pre-season and post-season tours.

The German top flight clubs only play 34 league games and there is only one domestic cup competition, where the winners will play six games (no replays), making an absolute maximum of 40 games per season for a club side, which is the absolute minimum for a Premier League side who get knocked out at the first stage of both cup competitions.

Forty games of football for millions a year and that’s without any squad rotation. Pathetic state of affairs.

True, but due to the TV money Premier League teams seem to have enlarged their squads to deal with the extra games and squad rotation is becoming normal.
I have no idea whether average minutes per player each season is more in the Bundesliga or Premier League, but I would guess the difference isn’t too great.

Gents, I think the main point of a winter break is being missed here.

The winter break is for one reason only, the weather, it’s that simple. The Germans and other nationalities have their winter break for that sole reason. They however play several friendlies before the season starts up again to prepare and raise match fitness. If we brought in a winter break our players would also need to play friendlies, whether here, Europe, Dubai or Australia so there’s no argument there.

Our winter this year has been exceptionally wet but generally our weather isn’t bad enough for a winter break, it won’t happen or at least it shouldn’t happen.

The FA Cup being devalued happened a long time ago. The only issue with no replays now is the little club losing out on a pay day, in a replay against a big boy at their ground, as per Garswood’s comments. To be honest, years ago, there could be 5 replays, all played on a mud bath, by the same squad of 15 players, with a heavy ball, in a kit that chaffed, without such as a whimper. Is football any better now?

The only countries not to have a winter break are England, Scotland, Israel and Spain.
I’ve exluded the countries that have summer seasons.
Weather isn’t the only reason. Italy, Portugal, Greece, Cyrpus and Malta all have around 2 weeks break.

I meant in terms of this topic and those countries mentioned, the others you mention are on religious grounds/holidays I think.

Either way it’s no reason for us to have a winter break, as we don’t have bad weather and are mostly muslim.
