Somebody on youtube has put this together as to what our best XI would look like if we had kept all of our players.
Not sure I agree with most of them.
31 October 2018 at 4:43 pm #172793Funny things these because they can tend to be based on opinions and they vary so much.
There are two other factors to consider ie era and levels.
Fitness and speed are probably at their highest levels they ever have been too.
Team formations too can play a part.
Personal favourites can also play a part.
Bobby Todd, John King, Carl Bradshaw, Darren Sheridan, Michael Brown, Lee Cattermole for eg all awesome players in their day but compare to now and we don’t find many midfielders who play their kind of game.
Same can be said for defenders and strikers.
Interesting subject though.
Mario Melchiot would be one for me who shines above many a player. He oozed class.31 October 2018 at 5:06 pm #172794Funny things these because they can tend to be based on opinions and they vary so much.

31 October 2018 at 11:40 pm #172798Then again, most of our best players aren’t playing anymore.
1 November 2018 at 5:51 pm #172810Now would Emile Heskey be our best ever striker? We revitalised his international career and he was chosen to play for England whilst a Latics Mon.
Have we had another striker who has been good enough to do this?1 November 2018 at 6:39 pm #172811Now would Emile Heskey be our best ever striker? We revitalised his international career and he was chosen to play for England whilst a Latics Mon.
Have we had another striker who has been good enough to do this?If you are going off the career they had after Latics then our greatest ever striker has to be Mickey Quinn. The amount of goals he scored and in the top division is awesome. He scored in each of his first 5 games for us scored a hat trick at Highbury for Cov and shed loads for whoever he turned out for. Better still when a typically horrible West Ham fan threw a pie at him he had the class to pick it up and eat it.
1 November 2018 at 11:54 pm #172813Pretty good at Latics too.
Like I said these sort of things are complicated.
If it’s on favourite strikers there’s Harry Lyon, Geoff Davies, John Rodgers, Graham Jones, Stuart Barlow, Nathan Ellington, Jason Roberts and Will Grigg.2 November 2018 at 12:13 am #172815No Wayne entwistle in that list Donny?
2 November 2018 at 1:34 am #172816Trying to decide who our best ever player is keeps me awake at night ;)
2 November 2018 at 3:30 am #172820Isnt Jason Roberts most prolific? Nzogbia might be decent shout on his day. Personally would prefer Bobby Campbell up there.
2 November 2018 at 3:01 pm #172821Leighton Baines probably our best ever left back and such a shame he didn’t go on to play for England.
Antonio Valencia did move on to greater things and probably should be in the best eleven.
Both of those should make the best Eleven and possibly should be in our best eleven if we had kept them or not.
Chimbonda right back?? For that season he was class the Judas git.2 November 2018 at 3:28 pm #172824My best XI would be (442 formation coz I’m proper old skool):
GK – Roy Carroll
RB – Pascal Chimbonda
LB – Leighton Baines
CH – Peter Atherton
CH – Arjan De Zeeuw
RW – David Lowe
CM – Joe Parkinson
CM – Jimmy Bullard
LW – Shaun Maloney
CF – Jason Roberts
CF – Emile HeskeyActually not sure 442 would work that well as Maloney never played well as an out & out left winger & neither did the other front runner for that spot – N’Zogbia. Discounted McCulloch coz I wanted a bit more from that spot than someone who could just win headers at the back post!! ;) ;)
