To be fair, although he was always a centre half, he did offer some energy from midfield. Especially in his first full season (2006/07) For example when he got that double at Goodison and scored the opener at Bramall Lane.

He chipped in with the odd goal, which was vital considering we’ve never been high in goals in the top flight.

The only way his sideways (arguably backwards, although there’s already a thread on this debate) move to West Brom will be a success for him (from his point of view) is if he plays, plays in central midfield and doesn’t fall out with anyone.

With Brunt, Morrisson and Dorrans on the books, the centre midfield part of the equation looks ruled out already.

I’d agree with the energy bit, but the type of goals he got had little to do with that. Plenty of defenders can score goals.

He could certainly get about the field and could go on some decent runs with the ball, but there was never a clinical pass, thru’ ball, or cross at the end of it.

Central defender all day long for me.

I agree, defender all day long, I was just saying that in midfield he does have certain assets.

Just seen this on SSN, “Paul Scharner says he can leave West Brom for free if one of seven clubs come in for him.”

Hasn’t even kicked a ball yet and already issuing his usual ‘come and get me’ plea to try and get his much sought after move to a bigger club.

I hope their fans fcking slaughter him.

      What a prat he is.

Mr Northernprimate, you are being very unkind indeed…..

……..to prats…….. The man is a complete @rsehole….I too have seen the report on SSN with him Roberto Di M and Fortune.

What’s made me chuckle is the ‘over opinionated’ comments and inappropriate ‘c0ck measuring’ made recently about his choice of ‘big team’. If WBA is a ‘big team’ then there is a queue of ‘arris showing events’ to be held locally in various shops – in his recent interview with $ky even he stated that he knew “WBA are known as a yo-yo team” and he hoped to help them stay in the Premiership. ‘Big Team’, in this reference, is a historic event, a myth at best, and does not correlate to anything in the known present.

Beautifully put “he can leave West Brom for free if one of seven clubs come in for him.”……I now see that not only did he not improve his football in the four and and a bit years he was with us but he failed to improve his command of the English language what he really wanted to say was……..

“can leave West Brom for free if one of seventeen bigger premiership clubs come in for him”.

          Adrian Chiles lovers…………..I’ve shyt ’em.

Hate to play the same old tune here…..

but West Brom ARE a bigger club than Latics.

Bigger fan-base, bigger ground, bigger history. Only a fool with absolutely no football knowledge would fail to admit this. Ok, they are smaller than LIVERPOOL, UNITED, and the other top five or six teams. But even so, they ARE bigger than Latics.

Truth be known, there is not much between Latics and Blackpool, when it boils down to it.

Not looking for a response or a bite, just saying it how it is. Why try and kid yourselves and pretend otherwise? I’m quite happy with us as a club. We are a small club and always will be. The only slight is on the size of our attendances. But if people can’t be bothered going at the great prices we now have in place, then it’s their loss. What can we do? Let people in for free? No. Let the pundits, other fans, and so-called ‘experts’ worry about our attendances, but don’t let it worry ourselves. As long as YOU and I are there, sod the stay aways.

Yes you are in a good ol’ trolling fashion……

Look……my friend. Your constant regurgitating of silly little facts about a ‘has been’ team does not strengthen your argument/opinion about a ‘minor club’ in the Midlands. Yet again you have taken your eye off the ball chap…….not once have I ever compared the status of our glorious team to that of those muppets – read again all that I have written on this subject.

What I did say was that Scharner had aspirations of going to a big club not a bigger club and I (and lots of others I have spoken to) do not regard WBA to be that big club he so wanted. Schoolboy error chum……RTFP

Now stop this c0ck measuring and peacocking before you embarrass yourself even more.

Oh! have a nice day fella. ;)

I don’t for one minute see myself as a fool as VAT suggests and have a decent knowledge of football having played and watched it for 40 years. But I still don’t see WBA being a big club and in the scheme of things at the moment no bigger than us. They are a prem league yoyo club-FACT, we have never been relegated from the prem-FACT. We have a better team at the moment than they have -ARGUABLY.

Now if you want to harp on about crowds and history I’m sorry but I just arn’t interested.

PS Remember Ellington leaving for that big club and what happened to him?

Cheeky bugger has been quoted saying we’ll go down!

I think he should worry about his own team staying up rather than his former employers.

Well that’s a common misconception that has arose from poor reporting, what Ellington actually said was “Everyone else thinks Wigan will go down, I however wish them to live long an prosper.”

Rumours eh, must have been his accent. He might have been slurring his words, I mean why else would he join West Brom?

The old ‘but West Brom are a bigger club than Wigan’ response is expected.

To be fair to Nathan Ellington i think at the time moving to West Brom (who had survived the previous season & were probably expecting to “push on”) was a more attractive proposition than staying at Latics (who were expected to get stuffed out of sight every week).

On the “greedy” side, Ellington admitted that potentially he had the opportunity to earn more money at Latics but his salary proposal was heavily linked into appearances & bonuses for goals & he wanted it all up front which WBA were prepared to give him. In hindsight I think Latics got it spot on
