      Having talks with

      West Bromwich Albion……….. apparently.

Well done Mr ‘Schlong’ – now you can be that ‘big fish’ in that little pond.

No offence Micky, and I’m not after a bite here.

But Albion ARE a bigger club than Latics.

Actually, I’ve always liked them as a club.

          Offence? None taken.

ARE a bigger club? Do me a f£ckin favour mate. They may have been around for a bit longer than we have (but then again who hasn’t?) and that’s all they have.

          Recent time in premiership?

Personally I cannot stand the Black Country t0ssers with their misplaced arrogance.

West Brom have the envious record of being the worst “Yoyo club” in premier league history.
On the other hand, Wigan have never been relegated from the premier league.

Which of the two do you feel deserve the acolade of being called the bigger / better club.? :? ;) :o

I’m a bit shocked that you have entered the ‘fray’ here, JRFATFAN. I would have expected you to admit most openly, that Albion actually ARE a bigger club than Latics. No, it’s true. They ARE bigger. I’m not after a bite or a row, I’m just telling the truth.

I think a good few of you need a reality check. Wigan Athletic are a small club, with a small fan-base, the hard-core of which is around 8,500. That is a fact. Until you lot stop deluding yourselves and just admit that, we will constantly be hit with the media jibes and digs of “No fans” and “Don’t deserve to be in the Premiership”. I think a fair few of our long-time fans ACCEPT things as they stand. Let the media and outsiders delude THEMSELVES, but at least accept it for yourself. We are the smallest club ever to play in the Premiership. (I laughed when the media said Burnley was) I don’t think our 6 seasons in the top flight count for anything, especially when you look at Albion’s history. Cup Finals, European football, etc.

I have no problem accepting that we have a small fan-base, and I think a few others do as well.

DUKE-To be honest, I’m past the stage in life where I ‘hate’ certain football clubs. It’s all a bit childish. However, for various reasons, I’m not keen on Birmingham City, and also Sunderland. (More to do with their fans than their manager) And of course, Notlob, as a local rivals thing. (Bigger club than us though….ooh, I can hear the shaking now! Ha Ha!!!)

LANDGATE- I’m a bit shocked you can’t see the wood for the tree’s either, mate.

WBA are without a doubt, a BIGGER club than Latics. As are Forest, Leeds, Ipswich, etc etc. I’m not saying being a bigger club get’s you points. Does it hell! But if we are talking about the actual SIZE of a club, and it’s fanbase, history, etc. Then we are smaller than the Albion.

There’s no question of it. Anybody who denies that really is deluded.

He is right… They may be bigger clubs.. but doesn’t make them better. They just have more history and that is all (and fans of course)

There was no need for that long response Dave.
Unless you or anyone can give a proper definition of what a “big club” actually means, then I would refrain from even suggesting that WBA are bigger than Wigan.

I’ll give you my definition for what its worth.

A team that fight out the premier league title year after year.
A team that regularly represent their country in europe.
A team that have won major trophies and are there and there abouts each year in the FA and Carling cup.

What doesn’t make a big club in my eyes is:-

One that simply has a big fan base. Whats big about that? The likes of WBA, Newcastle and Leeds get massive followings when they are doing well but they fall off like hell when they are not. If thats what makes them a big club then its you that is deluded Dave. The fans that come on here from those clubs have obviously spouted out their drivel for that long, they’ve convinced you that they are massive clubs.

Just tell me what WBA have done in the past 20 years to make them a big club apart from get 20-30 thousand watchingh them?

I’ll save you the time in responding…..Fek Aw!! :o

And what exactly have WE done? Got promoted a couple of times? (So have West Brom. They played us in the old Div 3- Beat us 1-0 at Springfield, Craig Shakespeare Penalty. 1-1 at the Hawthorns, Taylor for WBA, Worthington for us. Following season, we beat them 1-0 at Springfield, Chris Makin scored, and West Brom beat us at the Hawthorns 5-1, to all but relegate us.)

We have also reached a cup final and capitulated…badly. We didn’t even get to the Premiership as Champions. Only thing we have won is the Autowindscreen’s.

You could actually argue that they have won more than us, with the times they have got promoted again. One thing IS for sure. All those parachute payments will have been received gratefully…….

                        I bet WBA aren’t £54 milion in debt. :(

Take whatever measure of a “big club” you want, West Brom is a bigger club than Wigan, as are Leeds and Newcastle as mentioned in other threads.

It’s all well and good saying what have they done in the last 20 years, but at least they did something in the 40, 50, 60 years before that.

Interpretation and semantics. When Scharner ‘finally’ left us (it took him almost two years) his talk was for a dream move to Liverpool, Everton was mentioned as was Aston Villa – his own idea was to move to a ‘bigger club’ with potential to win silverware and possibly European football. This silly ‘c0ck measuring’ competition between Latics and WBA is laughable.

If Scharner was offered a contract with Leeds can anyone here honestly say or believe that’s what his intention was when he decided to move (it’s still a ‘bigger’ club)

                          No – thought not.

………………….and by the way what exactly have WBA achieved in the past 40, 50 years or so – a quick scan of their history actually shows them up to be the ‘massive’ team they believe they are – only in their deluded Black Country little minds.

Sharner’s ambition was to move on to a ‘bigger’ club that has more potential than we could offer – WBA is hardly that.

Anyway, change the phrase “big” club for “traditional” or “established” club and I’m more right :)

Thanks Griff for seeing where I’m coming from.

West Brom always were one of the ‘traditional’ clubs. A founder member club, they have so much history to them as a club. To me, they are exactly what a football club should be. They represent a tough, working class, industrial area (West Bromwich, Sandwell, Dudley, Smethwick, etc) For decades, the localpopulation has left the foundary and made it’s way down to the Hawthorns. They’ve backed their club. Cup Finalists in the 30’s, 50’s and 60’s, when they notably beat Everton in 1968, with a Jeff Astle goal. They also experienced European football, and early floodlit games against the likes of MTK Budapest, and other European sides. Then, in the 70’s and 80’s, they had an exciting team featuring the likes of Tony ‘Bomber’ Brown, the late Laurie Cunningham, Cyrille Regis, Brendon Batson, Bryan Robson, etc.

They actually became a ‘Yo-Yo’ team in the early to mid 80’s, when they had the iconic ‘no smoking’ logo as shirt sponsors. Eventually, they ‘did a Man City’, and fell further, into the 3rd tier, when they finally faced us. (91/92-92/93 seasons) They got promoted as we got relegated, and as we struggled to survive in the basement, they established themselves in the 2nd tier. Eventually, they got themselves up to the top flight, and have been a ‘Yo Yo’ side a few times since then.

The parachute payments they have had, along with their large fan base, must mean they are ok financially.
