Thanks for that ‘potted’ history Dave, stuff I already knew from ‘researching’ the topic on the web – I’m better informed but none the wiser. It also only goes to confirm what I said earlier that they are a shYtty little team in the backwater of the Midlands.
How on earth does “in the 70’s and 80’s they had an exciting team” strengthen your opinion.
Well Griff; if indeed Scharner said last May – I’m leaving Wigan with the intention of seeking a more established or tradional club then I would concede, however, somehow that’s not quite how it came out – I stand by what I say.

We’ll agree to disagree then chap. ;)
My point is one thay you yourself have made, ie what is a big club, a question that no-one has ever satisfactorily answered, IMO.
If you took a straw poll of say, 1000 neutral football fans nationwide, and asked them to list football clubs in terms of “bigness” without specifying any citeria, I bet Wigan would come very low down those rankings compared to West Brom, Newcastle and Leeds.
If history plays a part in deciding what a “big club” is, as griff and VAT suggest, then Notts County and Preston North End are also big clubs.
How far do you want to go back FFS? We are talking 2010 my friends and West Brom in the scheme of things are no bigger than Wigan.
My point will be proven when they yoyo yet again and the 15,000 faithul will turn up to boing, boing um again at the Hawthorns, whislt we fight it out for the 7th consecutive season in the big league.
Here is their CV. Can you imagine if they had only had one manager during the 122 year history and he was now applying for a job to manage a top 4 team in the prem league. But Mr chairman I manage a big club, look at my record…

It’s a very subjective thing.[/quote]
Indeed….and as I said earlier “Interpretation and Semantics” is how this thread was being read/written.
You can’t have it both ways Griff….either stick to “change the phrase “big” club for “traditional” or “established” club and I’m more right” or convince us otherwise.
Like you say it’s down to opinion….
………….there are those on here who are allodoxaphobics.
Hey Ho!….bored with this topic now – it’s going nowhere (IMO)
;)

For “more right”, read “more in agreement with Dave”

In all honesty, I didn’t need to research it on the web….
I already knew. (Sad anorak that I am)
JRFATFAN- Truth be told, you don’t have to go back that far at all. In fact, I recall back in about 2002 (was it?) when we beat them at our place in the League Cup. 3-1 wasn’t it? Ellington hat-trick.
Now tell me I am wrong, but I am sure that the result that night was considered to be something of a ‘scalp’. I am right, aren’t I?
Any result against a team higher than you in the league or cup can be deemed a “scalp”.
Just recently Hartlepool beat Sheff U in the Carling cup and I’m sure the monkey hangers would see that as a “scalp”. Does that necessarily make Sheff U a big club?
If Morcambe was to beat Scunthorpe then that would be a scalp is Scunthorpe a big club?.
Blackpool have just beaten Wigan in the prem and from their reaction that was a scalp. Are we a bigger club than Blackpool?
Your digging yourself in a bigger whole Dave, please leave it.!

Yeah, but when we beat WBA they were a ‘bigger’ team than us.
Leeds are a bigger club than us, so are forest, wednesday, middlesbrough, etc….west brom may even be a bigger club than us but who wants to play for a yo yo club who have medicore players. I think if he could turn the clock back he’d sign a new contract with us, he’s just probably too proud to come running back to us and took the only offer on the table. I’m glad he’s gone anyway, we have much better midfielders than him and I’d only want him back if he plays centre back because he’s quality in that position.
leaving the “what exactly makes a club big” debate to one side I have to admit to having quite a chuckle when i saw Scharner had signed for the Baggies
As someone else has pointed out, we’ve had to listen to Pul Scharner pontificate for the last 2 to 3 seasons about what level of football he deserved to be playing at & therefore which clubs he should be playing for as opposed to Latics
Well now he’s signed for one of possibly the only 2 or 3 sides in the top flight who are worse than Latics & who have even less chance than us of playign European football.
So what happened Paul – did all of these “big” clubs laugh in your agents face when he hawked you around this summer
I always rated Scharner as a centre half but his attitude stank under Hutchings, Bruce & finally Martinez and his over-inflated sense of his own self-worth knows no bounds. i expect to be reading from him around March or April time when WBA are in the relegation mire that he’ll be looking to move on in the summer & that Liverpool, Everton & Villa are all looking at him coz he deserves to be a central midfielder at a top 6 club
On his abilities as a central midfielder I read Di Matteo spouting in the papers about what a great midfielder he was – he can’t have watched him much
The whole big club thing is a term that the media seem to love to be able to generate interest in selling papers by flattering ego’s, I wouldnt worry about it.
The whole point of the english football system is that a club like Wigan, and Wimbledon before them were able to climb the pyramid of leagues and get to the prem.
The basic fact is money rules and we have a bag of it, so thats why we are there. !
