I believe the warriers are looking at moving to leigh sports village on a trial period if the PL get their way, apparently lsv is not paying for itself and so the move would suit both the council and the rugby.
The Premier League have no jurisdiction over Wigan RLFC, it’s Wigan Athletics problem, not Wigan RLFC.
But as landlord, what do you do IF this bull is correct?Wigan Athletic, brings in £40+ million, plus over £3 million extra into Wigan’s economy (compared to when we were not in the Prem) due to over 80,000 extra people coming in.
Wigan Warriors bringing in £200,000ish plus very little in the way of extra income to the town.
Believe me, if the Premier League say something goes, it will happen…
For the record I hate the fact they have that power…
How do you arrive at those figures?
Also the Premier league TV rites may be £40 million now, but what will happen when Offcom get their way.
And how much money are Latics losing per season out of that £40 million ( I know it’s not just Latics losing money)
I’m not anti Latics by the way, I’m just not a football fan, although I did enjoy watching the Arsenal v Barcelona games.
And then what happens if Latics get relegated, or do you think this non existent rule will be applied further down the leagues.
Did you see the state of the Burnley pitch the other week? That is football only and it was terrible. The non share is a non starter unless the PL decide to purchase the lease (either of us) and fund a new ground for (either of us). Somehow I can’t see it happening, can you?
Check the council minutes of the application for the stadium, it was built for the two sports.
Good luck in your fight against relegation and let’s hope this stupidity gets put to bed for once and for all.
9 April 2010 at 2:29 pm #29112I don’t think that the majority of prem clubs needed would vote for the change anyway
BUT
if they did then if Latics didn’t comply they would be breaking membership rules & their membership would be rescinded
Faced with that choice Whelco (who as far as I can tell still own the ground despite what was said at the start of this season) would have to make the choice about whether they would seek to break the lease they have with the rugby
This, I imagine, would be extremely costly not only in legal fees but Wigan RL would I assume sue them for the amount that it would cost to plan & build a new stadium which isn’t buttons
From what i can remember, there was also funding & planning permission stipulations on the ground being multi-use. If Whelco were to stop one of the clubs from playing at the DW there could be further cost implications that way too9 April 2010 at 3:10 pm #29114Check the council minutes of the application for the stadium, it was built for the two sports. Two sports. Football and Orrell Rugby Union wasnt it ?
Always though Warrios were only “invited” to play there once the JJB was half-built.
I’m sure you’ll correct me if i’m wrong – once you’ve done with writing to the BBC to complain about Alan Beswick :D
9 April 2010 at 7:21 pm #29118The duel usuage argument is a bit of a red herring, construction of the stadium was already well underway for Latics and Orrell before the Warriors came on board.
Orrell were paid off/thrown out, whatever your take is on this situation, so there is a precedent for this sort of thing, even if it is not exactly like for like.
Planning permision may have dictated the stadium was duel usuage, but for how long?
The Warriors initial lease was only for 25 years, then extended to 50 years after Latics were handed control of the stadium. The Warriors could potentially have been removed from the stadium in just 15 years time, so clearly the duel usuage requirement is not for the lifetime of the stadium.
There has also been talk about Wigan council not allowing another stadium to be built in the town, but this doesn’t make sense.
At the time planning permission was granted for the DW Stadium, the Warriors weren’t part of the plans, and already well on their way to selling Central Park.
Does this mean Wigan council would have denied the Warriors plans for their own stadium in the borough, i.e. the proposed one at Marus Bridge?
The Premier League proposal is ridiculous and backed by clubs a great many Warriors fans support, but it shows how tenuous the Warriors stay at the DW Stadium is, no wonder the LSV has been investigated as a potential home.
10 April 2010 at 2:45 am #29138TyldesleyLatic was the sensible reply.
To No1fan.
When was planning permission given for the build of the stadium?Do you think the PL have any jurisdiction over Wigan RLFC’s tenancy at the stadium.
If Wigan RLFC went to court over that agreement, who do you think would win, and more importantly, who would they be up against in court?
If Wigan Athletic get relegated (I hope they don’t) where would that then leave them?
Do you think that this non rule will be applied below the Premiership?
Pleas answer ALL the questions, not just cherry pick.

10 April 2010 at 3:59 pm #29161”By the pess definition, drunk idiots at a football game = Hooligans.Call them what you like at the rugby, it’s creeping into your game.”
it really isn’t
It isn’t creeping in to your game coz its always been there albeit on a smaller scale as there are less people that follow your sport & less teams to follow.
But the long standign RL fans I know will admit it as well as many on here who went watching the rugby on the 80’s. On a personal level in all but 1 rugby league game I’ve been to (& I’ve only been to 5 or 6) I’ve seen bother of one form or anotherI also had the misfortune to be out with my wife & baby in St Helens town centre at lunch time on Good Friday & the conduct of the majority of your fans I was unfortunate enough to encounter was an embarrassment to the town to be honest.
I’m not some naive kid who thinks any group of sports fans walking through town after a few beers & chanting are hooligans but some of your lot really do need to start conducting yourselves with a lot more class if what I saw last week was indicative of their actionsBet they dont go to Salford or Warrington throwing their weight about they allways gets the second prize there

I am in absolutely no doubt Whelan will have drawn up a contract that gives him the final say, previous events with Orrell and rearranged Warriors games indicate this.
As far as this ruling only applying to the Premier League, it really makes no difference to Latics, it’s the Warriors who need to have contingency plans.

Or not…………
Whelan has had a rant in the Obby apparantly – “What are the Premier League going to do about kicking the rugby out? They’ve got a contract to play there”
Does it really work like that Dave ? ?
Now we can all get back to normality of us hating the cuckoo’s and them hoping we cease to be at some point in the near future while they continue to hope DW drops dead.
