Once again the finishing third syndrome kicks in and how bad must that have been for Brighton last night.
Miss out on automatic promotion by just 2 goals on 89 points and get knocked out by Sheffield Wednesday who finish on 74 points. Must be gutted.
Is this right and is it not time now to scrap this end of season lottery.
Let the clubs get the promotion who have got the points over the 46 games or alternatively top three gain automatic and the next four play off in a mini league for an extra place. Commiserations to Brighton who have had a great season but have no reward from it despite chasing the automatic place right untill the last day.

To add to the post. Brighton lost at home to Middlesborough 3-0. If that scoreline had have been 2-0 or 3-1 Brighton would have been promoted on goals scored and Middlesborough would have been in the annual lottery. So close.

A straight 3 up 3 down in all divisions for me, no play offs unless two teams finish exactly the same, which is highly unlikely.

Very unfair the play off system, and just another way to squeeze a few more quid from the fans.

          Fuck the EFL

If play-offs remain they really should be one legged, at the home of the higher placed club, with the final again being at the home of the higher placed club. That way, league position really does give you a huge advantage.

            I agree with that.

It still doesn’t alter the fact that a team finishing 6th and finishing 15 points behind 3rd place could get promoted, it should be how many points a team accumulates over 46 games that determines promotion, the fairest way is 3 up 3 down. Simple!

Having the play-offs increases the number of teams involoved in possible promotion, so it keeps the end of the season more exciting.

Prior to play-offs if you we were outside the promotion places most of the games at the end of the season turned into half hearted kick-abouts because there was nothing to play for.

So I can fully understand why they have play-offs.

If it was just play-offs that decided the winner (like in rugby), then that wouldn’t be fair. But I like them as they’re an added incentive to teams who weren’t quite good enough to get the automatic promotion places.

Winners always get a trophy which is ludicrous.

I’m a fan of the play offs but would like to see final league position rewarded more.
Maybe 6th play away at 5th, winners play away at 4th, winners play 3rd at Wembley.

You can debate this all you want, but teams know the score before the season starts, its not like it’s something that’s been introduced with 5 games left. As SW says, it prolongs the season and makes for some exciting final games.

We more or less rolled over and played dead for Barnsley, this would be the case in many games in April / May time , if just the top 3 went up.

Brighton bottled it 3 games on the bounce, twice against a team they should have beaten over two legs but didn’t. It’s not the play off system that is wrong, its Brighton’s inability to beat Boro and Wednesday when it mattered, that cost um and for that reason, they don’t deserve to go up.

What sort of a sport uses playoffs to decide anything major ;-)

As someone said and as I always say regards the eggs…..you know the score at the start of the season.

If we finish 6th next year and win the playoffs will we be saying we don’t deserve to go up and offer it to 3rd??? Will we balls!

Of course we wouldn’t offer it to third whilst we play under the present play off system. Yes the play offs add some spice to the end of the season. Yes we all know the rules at the beginning of the season and yes there are many good arguments for and against the play offs as put forward by everyone contributing to this thread but it doesn’t mean the play offs are a fair reward if a club just misses out on automatic promotion. There should and could be room to change and one legged semis at the highest club with no replay is as good a way of doing this and better than what we have now.
Yes other sports have play offs to decide the actual title winners. This gives clubs the advantage of getting into a play off position then resting players before the season finishes to save them for a play off. Now that isn’t really right either.

Play offs indeed give teams who are 7th, 8th, 9th, etc a chance to have something to play for. Remember when we sneaked in at the end of the 98/99 season only to be so cruelly beaten by the hand of goat & how that was never a penalty for that foul on kevin sharpe (i think it was)

I liked that concept of the play-offs when the team 3rd from bottom in the higher division played the team 3rd from top in the lower division. It then determined if the team stayed in their division or were relegated at the expense of the other team who won promotion. That for me was more exciting.
