What sort of a sport uses playoffs to decide anything major ;-)

As someone said and as I always say regards the eggs…..you know the score at the start of the season.

If we finish 6th next year and win the playoffs will we be saying we don’t deserve to go up and offer it to 3rd??? Will we balls!

I’m all for play-offs, but not just play-offs to decide the over all winner.

It has to be an automatic winner, and play-offs to decide the lower places.

In rugby (RL and RU are exectly the same) you can win every league game and be 20 point clear of second place, but lose in a one-off Grand Final and not be crowned champions.

That’s simply not fair and there’s little incentive to finish top of the table. You may as well ease off at the end of the season, finish lower down the table and rest players – then win the Grand Final.

Fully agree, which is why this stage of an egg season is dreadful to watch as teams just aren’t fussed.

Might be a tad fairer if the teams in the play off places received a goal start based on the number of points more they have than the team they are playing.

So a team finishing 3rd on 79 pts might get a 2 goal start when playing the 6th placed team who finished on 69 pots. i.e. a goal for every 5 points clear.

This could apply to every play off game, even the final. :woohoo:

If play-offs remain they really should be one legged, at the home of the higher placed club, with the final again being at the home of the higher placed club. That way, league position really does give you a huge advantage.

This would be a far fairer system and without the ball ache of Wembley.
Or even go a step further and let 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th battle it out in a one legged affair always at the home ground of the highest finisher, with the overall winner gaining an away final at the 3rd placed team.
          No trophy necessary either.

Or even have the 3rd team playing the 6th team at marbles at home and the 4th and 5th playing matchbox rugby on a neutral ground.

The winners of both games going into a grand final, were each player will play one game of rock, paper scissors. The first team to 6 will gain promotion to the next division.

Accrington and Brighton fans may have preferred Rock Paper Scissors. Both third placed and both knocked out by clubs 15 and 10 points behind them in the final table. Even the floodlights did their best to help Accy but to no avail.

Nothing wrong with the concept of the playoffs, think the original idea was to help try and increase gate revenue in the lower leagues, particularly the 4th Division as it was at the time, possibly the difference between a March clash between 8th and 9th getting 2,500 or 3,500 on. When you’re talking about gates that small, it can only be good for clubs if potential of playoffs makes games attractive to 500+ more spectators than they might otherwise have been.

Can see the argument for making it 1 leg home advantage to higher placed team….nothing wrong with that, but current setup is fine, everyone knows rules from Game 1 to 46. Just hope we as a sport, NEVER introduce playoffs to decide league winners and wish they’d get rid of a trophy for being the best team over a fortnight…ridiculous idea whoever came up with that.

Promotion used to be two up, two down. And the automatic places still are – finish in the top two and you go up. Nothing’s changed there.
The play-offs have introduced a little element of a “last chance” – finish in the third to sixth places and you may go up.
Finishing third doesn’t give you an automatic right to go up. Everyone knows that. You should have finished in the top two. Just as it always was when it was two up two down.
It’s fine as it is (minus the trophy of course).
