It’s interesting to read people on here harping on about why Bobby doesn’t play two forwards.
All this 4-4-2, 4-5-1 stuff is not really hard to work out.

You play the way Bobby does [and he sees it as 4-3-3] there’s a good chance that you’ll get plenty of possession. If you look at our games this season we have probably had the lions share in almost every game, [Fulham and a couple more apart].

However, the majority of possession is in the first two thirds of the pitch and not the last third, which if you can get it will really hurt the opposition. What you need playing this way is to have:-

      a) A world class finisher who puts away a goal every other chance or so.

b)One or two midfielders who can create their own chances or can bomb into the box to support the lone striker through out the game.

      and

      c) A bit of luck in front of goal[i.e. get a fair share of scrappy goals]

At the moment we have got the possession bit right, but struggling with the other 3 ingredients. I can see things getting better as the team gets familiar with this formation and one player in particular Hendry Thomas has suddenly clicked and is playing a superb holding midfield role but also has been seen going forward more in recent games. The introduction of tom Cleverley, particularly in the centre midfield role, has also brought something to the party now that young Macca is out for a while.

If you play with two out and out strikers you then concede more possession and therefore the other teams [who have probably got the more clinical finishers], will punish you more often than not.

Therefore, please understand what Bobby is trying to do, it may come off, it may not, but for me its worth him persevering with.
The Liverpool game was a prime example of Bobby’s formation and tactics working well. If we had played two up front and conceded possession to Gerrard and co we would have probably lost by 4 or 5.
      Hereby endeth the first lesson.

        Totally agree with you, Jrfatfan.

Especially regarding Hendry Thomas. What has happened to him? He’s showing exactly why he is rated so high. He’ll never be a goalscoring midfielder, but as a stopper, in the kind of ‘Javier Mascherano’ type role, he really is looking good isn’ he?

I think that the missing elements to our game are slowly being rectified. And what about the pace in our team? Especially Charles and Victor. But one or two others are not slow, either.

bob is going to get it right.if you remember back end of last season when kirkland use to roll it out, pointless passin across the back four, back to kirkland, repeat etc.feel as though we have improved a lot since then, lot better going through midfield, just still slightly missing up front yet, need more of a threat in the box,but i feel as though we are almost there, thats until january comes and we lose half our team!

Most probably going to lose N’Zogbia and Cleverley. Anyone else, I think we can just about put up with. But we need to bring in suitable replacements for one, if not two of those players. Possibly only N’Zogbia will need to be replaced, as James McCarthy should be due back around then.
I’m stuck for a Premiership based replacement for Charles, so if we are looking at the Championship, how’s about Kris Commons? That James Coppinger of Donny Rovers seems to score a few as well.

The Carling Cup game at Arsenal has taken on extra significance in my view.
What player would want to leave a club who are in the semi final of a major trophy. Beat Arsenal, I know its a long shot, but beat Arsenal and we might just keep hold of the likes of zog, the bird man and Hugo in January.

Win the dam thing and we might even keep them next season. :o

You can’t be saying stuff like that jr, or you’ll be dragged from your bed during the night, put into stocks and ridiculed to an inch of your life.

4-4-2 is the only way to guarantee success don’t you know?

…..and, how exactly Mr Walker, does one get membership to this club? Is it by personal recommendation per chance?………. I’m only asking for a friend, you understand.

It’s all just a rumour Mr C. Some say it doesn’t happen. Some don’t talk at all.

It’s a ‘most probably’ situation, however, what do we need to do to retain the services of the ‘key’ players we have? Charles has listened and is aware of his worth….again, however, his ‘true’ worth/value will only be recognised in the post season window.

The ‘Big’ teams may only dabble, the sensible clubs will retain their stock – if only to cement their standing in this greed league – and those facing relegation will panic buy (in the false hope of survival). Moving on in January benefits no one……Charles, and we all know he is good, will stay til the end of the season because his stock will be so high the ‘big’ club he desires will come calling (unlike the schlong) and comparitive business can be done – I believe that he and the club both know this.

Changing our squad in January, selling/buying, would only damage our chances of retaining the enviable position of p !ssing off MOTD, Lawrenson, $ky, Lineker, Hansen and those in this town in the 80’s who wanted us to curl up and die.

If I hear one more comment about Jordi and how ‘sh one t’ he is – so help me – I’ll swing for someone.

We are – so everyone professes publically – Wigan Athletic – and those without children will not understand………… unconditional love. It drives our soul, our being, our Raison d’etre.

Keeping our playing staff in January should be a priority – at whatever cost.

I almost did exactly that at half-time Micky, and it was a good, long-standing friend at that who nearly copped it.

As one of my other, more rational, good mates pointed out: “You can say one thing for Jordi, he certainly divides opinion”.

He’s right, and I’ve decided now to leave it at that, from now on.
