BBC are having a twitter debate about the most pointless signings in PL history with the likes of Massimo Taibi being touted around.
We’ve had quite a few in our history.
Pasquale Bruno for example. Signed from Hearts and played 45 minutes before buggering off. Seemingly, we were the last club he ever played for.
Any more? Remember it’s pointless signings not crap signings.
3 February 2014 at 6:38 pm #126745Being in the Premier League led to several pointless signings, just to add squad numbers.
Thinking a bit further back:-Magno Vieira – Boy wonder from Brasil who never played for us.
Neil Woods – Loan signing under Deehan.
Dino Hernandez (?) – We will never know what our scouts saw in him.
Chris Lightfoot – Record signing, but sold off to Crewe in less than one season.3 February 2014 at 7:25 pm #126746Andy Webster – what was that all about? Four games and that was it. Reinvented slow.
3 February 2014 at 7:47 pm #126747William Lever made the quote about advertising, “I know half my advertising isn’t working, I just don’t know which half.”
I guess that football managers have a similar problem with signings.
3 February 2014 at 10:13 pm #126750I remember some guy from Bolton on loan, Whittaker or something. When he played I honestly thought Jeremy Beadle had stitched the club up.
3 February 2014 at 10:55 pm #126754What about David “Super Sub” Fairclough.
If that is not the most pointless signing in the history of signings I don’t know what is.
I remember him coming out with this shyte about us not playing to his strengths, which for the record were non-existent.
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!4 February 2014 at 1:01 am #126758gudgeon are almost non-existant in most places these days.
signals
4 February 2014 at 1:33 am #126759Richard bouazan ?? Dutch winger. That’s probably spelt wrong.
he springs to mind when thinking of our pointless PL signings. If we are going for crap half of bruces signings would be in there.

4 February 2014 at 11:19 am #126776Richard Marshall-Barbadian who didn’t like the winter weather
Agahowa- nothing needs saying
Mauro Moreno
pascal Bruno4 February 2014 at 1:58 pm #126780Surely a pointless signing is one which was never needed in the first place rather than one who didn’t turn out to be very good.
The Beed using Taibi as an example doesn’t work – United needed a keeper & they signed one. That he turned out to be total garbage doesn’t make it pointless. At latics I’d probably go with 3 of Bobby’s loan signings – Sinclair, Van Aanholt & Hernandez.
If you’re gonna bring someone in on loan then you need to be 100% sure that you’re gonna use them whilst they’re with the club. To bring someone like that in & then hardly ever use them just smacks of going to a club, asking if they had anyone you could loan & simply taking who they offered without doing any kind of research or scouting of em.
I’m sure that’s not what happened but that’s how it looked from the outside looking in4 February 2014 at 2:09 pm #126781When I think of pointless, I think of this lot. They probably weren’t pointless when we signed them but they became pointless after never really playing or being rat when they did play.
Geoff Horsfield
For Geoff Horsfield read Grant Holt
Mauro Moreno good call
Agahowa
David Graham
Chris Lightfoot, never got this one, what happened there?
David Unsworth – but scored the pen at Sheff United so debateable whether pointless
Stephen Caldwell
Jorg Smeets
Guiessepe Paladino
Jaimie Barnwell Edinboro
Wayne Biggins
Per Frandsen though he did get crocked
Leigh Step Over Jenkinson
Olivier Krapo
Gino Padula
Ray Woods 2nd time round4 February 2014 at 2:10 pm #126782Richard bouazan ?? Dutch winger. That’s probably spelt wrong.

He was a decent player for the reserves and scored some belters !
Quick edit- His name was Rachid by the way, not Richard !
4 February 2014 at 2:10 pm #126783ps at least Geoff Horsfield knew where the net was
If I could put Grant Holt in twice I would
Did he start for Villa Saturday? How did he look, trim or lardy?
4 February 2014 at 2:32 pm #126785Guiessepe PaladinoThat has to go down as a classic Latics signing
Brought in solely as an emergency player & to play in Latics cup game at Coventry after Phil Hughes broke his finger & whoever the back up keeper was (Adkins I assume) was also injured.
Someone at Latics hadn’t done their homework though & he was cup tied having played for St Helens Town in a qualifying round. Hence Latics had to go begging round the league to find a keeper that a club didn’t mind having (or wasn’t already) cup tied & wound up with Tony Pennock from Stockport -
