Is it the system or the players ?, I beginning to think Martinez is as much to blame as the players regardless of Caldwell’s mistakes. Why all of a sudden does Watson play in front of 2 centre half’s ? if your struggling for a left back then wouldn’t it make sense with what players we have at hand to have 3 in the middle Scharner, Caldwell, Golobart with Boyce and Espinoza or even a match fit Jones were Watson played to break things up.

A ball playing side like us needed someone to distribute the ball not play back / sideways back / sideways, love him or loath him last night’s game would have suited Gomez and when he did come on we looked better going forward.

Again MacManaman taken off around the hr mark, recently he’s scored 2 crucial goals after the 75 minute and looks a player in form. Martinez has subbed him around the 60 minute mark against Spurs, West Ham , Swansea. Like Kone he can pop up and give you a goal but Martinez doesn’t let him see a game out.

Last night we bring a right back on when we need a goal while Henriquez is bench warming, what a waste of a signing that’s been.

I know were down to the bare bones at the back but I don’t think it was the time to pish around playing Watson in that hole, since Watson’s comeback we’ve shipped 5 goals. Rather than change the system he should have change the players to fit the system. For me Martinez got it wrong big time and certain players didn’t perform.

To get out of the championship takes a particular type of manager and for me the style Martinez plays just won’t cut it.

take Hull , I’ve had to turn the TV off while watching them play but fat head got them playing a way to get them in into the Prem.

Let’s see how many “contract clause’s” sunddenly appear once were down.

Sums up last night for me, how could it have been any worse.

2 schools of thought on who was to blame. Defence for not being able to pass the ball under pressure(Swansea could easily) or Martinez for asking them to do it, when they’re not good enough. Chicken and egg.

When Joel did start lumping it, I don’t think it resulted in one positive bit of attacking play as we just aren’t set up to do it and Martinez didn’t offer any alternative.

I still think it’s the best season footballing wise but general bad luck and injuries have finally caught up with us. With a full defence all season and a stable keeper, we’d have been mid-table comfortably.

you might be right but I just don’t get the Watson thing. Wouldn’t a match fit Jones have been better there ?. Between Caldwell and Watson in front it was just too easy to pass through us.
For me Boyce , Scharner , Golobart at the back would have been a far better option.

I have said it several times now, Watson is Championship standard at the best ! I was shocked to see him back in the fold at weekend !

Fine margins. If MacArthur had connected to make it 3 we most likely would have won.

If the defence hadn’t been decimated by loss of ramis and Alcaraz for most of season pretty confident we wouldn’t have been in this position. Just made worse by loss of figs, jean, at such a crucial time. Even the much maligned caldwell hasnt been fit all season and even the back up Lopez is still injured. In a system where we play 3 centre halves its been horrendous bad luck. Yeah we can criticise last nights formation, personnel and defensive tactics but ultimately I think these injuries told in the end.

Since his return in a defensive role we’ve shipped 5 goals and looked poor at the back at both West Brom and last night.

I aint no football manager but to choose Caldwell over Golobart and Watson over Jones to me was just pure folly ! RM is the manager and it was his call and with the beauty of hindsight we can all say that it was a bad mistake by him. Even with the injuries etc I still think that he had no idea how to deal with the situation that unfortunately arose last night !

No, you’re not and yes, he is.

You forget that Martinez watches these players day in and day out.

Martinez clearly wanted someone to to play that ‘quarterback’ role and in my opnion, Watson would be better at that than Jones. He played it before one last season, if I recall correctly. McCarthy, in my view, would have been an even better choice, but that would probably have meant playing Gomez and, for some reason, Martinez didnt want to do that last night.

I like Golobart but on Saturday he looked like a rabbit on the headlights when he came on. Maybe Caldwell was picked for his experience. I’m no big Caldwell fan, far from it, but other than the mistake for the goal (which I missed because I was looking down at my phone thinking there was no danger) he wasn’t that bad. Great pass for the goal and a header that on any other day might have gone in.

Did you not watch the semi? After 5 mins I could see that our style would lead to a comfortable win.

Poor decision playing Caldwell …. golobart must be a vessel if he can’t oust him.Taking macmanaman off for the galloping hairpin was another bad one. But the 4 season old problems still haunt us and in fact have worsened. The continual passing our way out of trouble. The players seem indoctrinated by this philosophy. …..does Robbie fine them if they put their laces through it ??? It was nothing more than a shambles last night .A great opportunity at home against a team struggling for a win, michu injured and with the crowd fired up and granted I think nerves played its part but we showed why we are where we are.If we do drop it wont be because of these last 5 or 6 games or the catalogue of injuries in these last few games it will be because of the shite we served up from October to January.
