Given the fact it was against Utd who we had most possesion, corners shots etc, in fact the only stat where Utd had most were fouls commited. The fact thar Sir Alex Ferguson said that we deserved to win and were the better team a statement he uses very rarely. The fact that a team manages to stop Utd playing their normal game so superbly. The fact that everyone felt Utd had won the league and that the Wigan game was a Gimme for them.

Given all the facts my question is this

Was the win against Utd the greatest performance by any Wigan Athletic team ever?

As a fan of over 40 yrs I say Yes I reckon it is. :)

I definitely could believe it seeing that we have recently beaten Liverpool on their own middin and stood toe to toe with Chelsea on their own middin only to get beaten by two “offside” goals.

Me and my mate have been predicting for a while that sooner or later we would trounce a team or take one of the top four out.

If you have been watching the story unfold, the team have gradually improved this season, particularly since February.

If we avoid the drop and Bobby holds on to his prize assets, with the addition of a fox in the box, this team can be a regular top 10 finisher or even push for a Europa. DW did say that and to be fair he’s not been too far off the mark so far. goodpost

yes we have been steadily improving since february and we played really well against stoke and were very unlucky at chelsea but when you play utd ist always in the back of your mind that they will just be too strong, how wrong i was, but it was the mannor in which we won it was outstanding

            You mean this chin wag?

The Wigan chairman wanted to hear Martinez’s reasons for leaving Hugo Rodallega, Victor Moses and Mohamed Diame on the bench.

Whelan accepts Martinez’s explanation that he omitted them because they had only returned from international duty in the USA, Rwanda and South Africa respectively 24 hours earlier.

Whelan said: “I fully accept what he said and I back him fully. I thought it was diabolical that FIFA should schedule those friendlies when they served no purpose.”

Yep, he read him the riot act there didn’t he? Two of those players still aren’t in the starting eleven.

Or maybe we’ve improved since Maloney got into the team. But you can stick to your story if it makes you happy.

Quite possibly, but don’t forget some of the lower league heroics in the cup.

I’d say for a team of rag tags and misfits, to play a team of multi million pound internationals, some of which touted as among the best in the world, and play them off the park, to give them hardly a sniff of a chance for 90 minutes, and to pose a constant threat going forward, i’d say its one of the best performances i’ve seen full stop, never mind just from the latics.
I can imagine the joy and bemusement of the neutral fan, watching our team dismantle the best english team in the last 20 years, the frustration of Rooney and co, wondering where the fuck did that come from.

Martinez has moulded a team, that in fairness did not possess all the attributes to do what he wanted them to do……..at first, but given time and patience, a couple of things sadly missing from the modern game, he has shown what can be achieved, and the fact that his team has done it against 3 of the best in recent weeks shows its no fluke. I am proud of his integrity, his passion for the club and his willingness to believe in himself and his team, something we can all learn from, as i’m certain we’ve all had doubts this season.
It’s not over yet, still alot of work and a bit of luck maybe needed, but come what may, and i think that will be another season in the top flight, we will never forget what he, his team and his chairman have given us this season. goodpost goodpost goodpost

In fairness to Martinez (& I say this as a Darksider) the improvement began back in December when Latics played Blackburn & Bobby first tried out his 3 at the back formation.
It was clear in that game (& I think many spoke about it in the days following it) that he seemed to have finally found a formation that suited the players he had at his disposal.
During December the level of performance & results picked up (only lost 2 out of 7 & they were against United & Arsenal). January in fairness was shocking results wise but I think the team struggled when it lost Diame to the ACN & Bobby didn’t pick the right man to step in. Come February though he’d settled on McArthur & that gave the side the midfield solidity back & seemed to improve McCarthy’s form too but the side were still a bit too slow & plodding going forward. Step forward Maloney & there is a zip back going forward that was missing since N’Zogbia left. I don’t think Beausejour’s arrival can be under-estimated either as it gives a balance down that left hand side now
The points per game since that Blackburn match evened out over a season would get Latics 45 points. If you go from the start of Feb it goes up to 61 so its a very notable improvement

There is still one major weakness & that is up front where Di Santo will never be a lone striker (as a footballer I rate him – play his as part of a front 2 & the one who drops deep or in the hole between midfield & attack & I think he’d blossom), same goes for Rodallega & Sammon isn’t to the required skill level
                BUT
Bobby & the players deserve every credit for this improvement. I hope it carries on to keep us up & if so I hope it carries on over into next season too – I don’t think that the team is top 10 as another poster has stated or is even close but if Latics stay up, a season that isn’t a struggle from start to finish would be nice

I’m not trying to seek out disagreements with you recntly Tyldsley honest!

But the part where you mention Di Santo as a lone striker has already been put to bed by Martinez who wanted everyone to realise we dont play with a lone striker we play with 3 up front.

                #85092

I’m well aware of what Martinez has said on numerous occasions but he can say it until he’s blue in the face coz Di Santo is a lone striker.

The other 2 (at present Moses & Maloney) are midfielders whose main purpose is to get forward in support of Di Santo when Latics are attacking but who are also expected to drop back into more defensive midfield positions when Latics don’t have possession. They are by no stretch of the imagination strikers nor is their main position “up front”.
I see the current formation as a 3-4-2-1 (or actually 3-2-2-2-1) but its all about how you define it I guess – from what I can gather Bobby sees our formation as fluid depending on whether Latics are in possession or not, atatcking or defending etc.. so at times yes there may be 3 up front but its not an up front as in the 2 up front you see in a 4-4-2 or more comparable the 3 up front as Latics used to play with Liddell, Barlow & Haworth under Ray Mathias
