The Tactics Board – Did Wigan expose United weakness?

      #85154

Given the fact it was against Utd who we had most possesion, corners shots etc, in fact the only stat where Utd had most were fouls commited. The fact thar Sir Alex Ferguson said that we deserved to win and were the better team a statement he uses very rarely. The fact that a team manages to stop Utd playing their normal game so superbly. The fact that everyone felt Utd had won the league and that the Wigan game was a Gimme for them.

Given all the facts my question is this

Was the win against Utd the greatest performance by any Wigan Athletic team ever?

As a fan of over 40 yrs I say Yes I reckon it is. :)

I dont think we will ever top the performance against West Ham, at the brink of relegation at half time to come back and win 3-2 in the 90++++ min…[/quote]

Sorry marrer I disagree, against West Ham we played for a short period of the game, on Weds we dominated the most powerful side in British football. For Sir Alex to say the things he has said about us tells me that what we achieved is something special.I have been thinking back to the great heroics we have performed in the past Chelsea 81 FA Cup, City FA Cup 71 as a non league side etc but I still think the win against Utd is the best performance ever.

Well, I certainly haven’t been following the team as long as the rest of you (I’m a Yank, & adopted Wigan as my team when they were promoted). But, even though we played, well, it was a nice setup for us as ManU had a nice cushion at the top.

What about that League Cup semi-final vs Arsenal when Roberts scored? Was that a better overall performance? Tough to quantify. Two years ago (3? I’m getting old), we pretty much dominated at Old Trafford & were very unlucky to lose.

        Wigan play a 3-4-3 formation.
        Shush, don’t tell Tyldesley!

I dont think ive put my original question across too well. Some are missing my drift. The Utd result may not have brought about as much euphoria as say the Arsenal CC result or the Stoke ,Sheff Utd games but in my honest opinion the performance the other night is the most complete performance i have witnessed as a Latics fan ever. Here are some reasons why i think so.

Arsenal CC we lost 2-1 although we were great on the night we won on away goals.

Reading Yes we won and got promoted but were above them in the league and a better team than them at the time.

Sheff Utd 2nd best feeling after a game but it was a nervy game with not too much quality.

Stoke Another euphoric moment but Stoke should have been out of sight at half time.

Whilst the above games made you want to jump off Blackpool Tower the performances were nothing compared to the Utd game.

Incidently my personal greatest moment was in 1985 and the 3-1 win over Brentford. To see the team climb the then famous Wembley Steps to lift the Freight Rover Trophy is the one memory i will carry. The trophy itself was shoite bit it could have been an egg cup and it wouldnt have mattered.Just to see the boys climb them steps and turn to the fans with cup held high is the best feeling i have ever had.
