I dunno wot u have there Dazza but I like it. It looks like a Worriers badge that’s been vandalised :)
5 November 2009 at 2:02 am #12120Hmmm…..very interesting.
Firstly, the cut and style of the jacket. It looks like something from the 60’s or early 70’s, definitely. Look at those lapels, and their style.
It’s size medium. Fact is that people tended to be smaller in the past.
But the badge looks almost ‘modern’ with how it is woven onto the jacket. Perhaps it is just very well made and done?
I cannot think of any other explanation than it coming from the estate of someone with big Latics connections, perhaps an ex player, or club official.
But maybe a rugby fan decided to get a crest on an old jacket, and was aghast to see they’d put ‘Wigan Athletic AFC’ underneath it? In fact, that’s interesting. As until we left Springfield, the sign there stated ‘Wigan Athletic AFC’.I don’t know, maybe someone such as Jeff Rourke for example, can shed some light on it. I don’t know how you’d contact him. Supporters club, perhaps?
5 November 2009 at 2:20 am #12121Thanks for the replys lads, i know Jeff Rourke very well as i used to work with him at the Asda distribution centre at Ince for 11 years although i dont have a number for him nowadays i’m sure a few of the lads will.
Eventually might just put it on E-bay and see where it goes
I must admit i thought it may have been an old players or a director or someone like that as you rightly say looking at the lapels its deffo late 60’s early 70’s.
I’ll try and do a bit more digging and post back if i find anything!

The Badge is the Badge of Wigan Borough otherwise known as the “Ancient and Loyal” which was granted to the Borough in 1922. The Ancient and Loyal doesnt refer to the age of warriors fans it was added to the town charter to thank the area for being staunchly Royalist throughout the Civil war.
When Latics took over they decided on the use of this badge to retain fans from the Wigan Borough (the team that went bust to allow Athletic to come into being) days and to attract fans from accross the area rather than just the town centre. They used this badge at least until 1968 when they became founding members of the Npl. This is were things get hazy. Some people say they kept this badge until we were elected to the league but this was when i was swimming around my dads sack so i cant confirm this.
However as for the Jacket. The people i spoke to remember the directors strutting around in suit jackets and someone a bit younger ponders whether it could of belonged to Dr Maurice Reed who passed away recently however im not sure of the dates for this one.
Why dont you contact the club Daz plus they may be interested in it for the stadium tours!
5 November 2009 at 2:52 pm #12142I’d say put the debate on ‘Ye Olde Tree And Crown’ forum as well.
Somone might know something. Certainly about the badges.
