Paul Cook is happy to sit back and let the recruitment committee handle transfers. The 3 players signed were picked before Cookie joined the club. If this is the case have we wrongly been blaming Caldwell and Yootha for last seasons ridiculous comings and goings which saw us relegated. Surely the manager should be the one to identify the players he thinks we need to be signing
8 July 2017 at 6:11 pm #160328I would imaging GB had his say on these transfers being the manager at the time.
I’m sure Cookie will have the last say on who comes and goes from now on.
The scouts are there to recommend players not sign them. From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!8 July 2017 at 6:19 pm #160329It’s whose leaving that is the worrying thing and first match coming up and no keeper signed yet.
8 July 2017 at 6:21 pm #160330Also if there is to be more comings and goings there are not many friendly matches this year to gel the side together.
9 July 2017 at 6:14 pm #160333Dan Lavercombe is still on the books
9 July 2017 at 8:25 pm #160334And none of the last 3 managers thought of playing him. We can assume he isn’t gonna make the grade.

I think there’s time for young Lavercombe to make the grade. He was only 19 when we signed him, he’s now 21.
Actually this manager did think of playing him.

Only because he had no options jr, he would have had to play him as opposed to wanting to play him and that’s a massive difference. We are deep in the shit keeper wise and we cant deny it . But hey we have a super duper transfer committee who sort all this out so no sweat eh ?

11 July 2017 at 1:20 pm #160343Dean Henderson Manchester United goalkeeper who was in the England U20 squad that won the World Cup has signed a season long loan at Shrewsbury. Is it just me who isn’t happy or impressed with us having a committee who deals with transfers.
11 July 2017 at 1:35 pm #160344What has Shrewsbury making that signing got to do with the right or wrongs of Latics transfer workings??
If Latics had signed him people would be whinging about another young loanee gaining experience for his parent club rather than the long term benefit of Latics – just like they are at the possibility of the Brighton lad coming. The idea of the committee is that they help the manager identify players & scout any that the manager requests. If the manager gives them the nod they then deal with the other club, the player & the agents so that the manager can concentrate on coaching the first team.
From what we know Caldwell forced signings on the club that they weren’t happy with & we’re now saddled with a large squad that’s top heavy with a lot of dross that we’ll struggle to get rid of (Woolery, Whitehead etc..,). Likewise from the number of players he brought in that he’d worked with at United, Joyce was the driver behind the players brought in in January.
It’s getting a balance right between having something in place that allows the manager to concentrate on his primary job whilst allowing him the ultimate day in incoming & outgoing transfers

How do work that out tilders? The 3 players already in were targeted and negotiations underway before Cookie joined. Secondly when we chose this method the club stated that all aspects of players coming in would be scrutinized, stats, fitness levels injury record etc, then we brought in Bruce and Obertan who were crocked. Like every other Latics fan I am desperate for Cookie to succeed and want him to fashion his squad not be expected to work with players he doesn’t necessarily want. As for the Shrews signing this keeper its meant to highlight that this committee inexplicably let 2 signed keepers leave without having backup already in place. I don’t want a loanee tbh if he is going to be the only one recruited. You cannot get away from the fact that mistakes made last season which proved so damn costly look like they could rear their ugly heads again. Not acceptable.
