Went for talks with them yesterday, is finalising things today/tomorrow with them or a new deal that Whelan has put to him at Latics.
Villa fans don’t seem too impressed with the thought of him going there though……
FA Cup Winners 2013, sounds good that
9 June 2011 at 10:36 am #67395Heard this last night from my mate but didn’t believe him. Last night I convinced myself that Bob is a blue and won’t leave to join Aston Villa. However, I have come to the realisation that anything can happen. Really hope he stays and if he went really don’t now who we would bring in.
9 June 2011 at 11:22 am #67396Seems to be the bookies fav for the job now.
Shame if he does go, but he is like a dodgy MOT car. Always happy that your carcontinues to run and produce the goods, but you know he will let you down. Think we have had our run of luck with bobby.
9 June 2011 at 11:27 am #67398…that maybe but who would we appoint manager? I think there is much more to come from us under Martinez. Hopefully he will sign a new deal and give Dave a reason to splash some cash!
9 June 2011 at 12:20 pm #67400I suppose we’ll find out soon enough….
I just wonder if this is Whelan announcing to the Latics fans that a big club wanted to get him and so maybe we should think ourselves lucky we have him?
Just a different view!!!!
9 June 2011 at 12:28 pm #67402Maybe Martinez is using this to make sure Whelan finds his Warchest (There I have said it…) and splash some cash, keep his better players.
Martinez will struggle at Wigan if he best players keep getting plucked from him each transfer window. If he goes to Villa will he have the stability he needs?
If he goes, replacement should be a fans consortium of Internet experts. That way we cant fail.
9 June 2011 at 12:39 pm #67405Its a difficult one to comment or pass judgement on this – even as a darksider
In the cold light of day, its obvious that when he speaks to Villa that they will offer him a far bigger wage packet & transfer budget than he will ever get at Latics. There’s not many of us who, if we are honest with ourselves, would turn that down so I’m not sure that we can expect Bobby to either
On the other hand, I’m also pretty certain that Bobby knows that no other chairman and fans (I know he gets regular stick on here but its never developed into open revolt on the terraces) would have stuck by him for 2 years through some of the results, performances & barren runs that he’s had whilst at Latics & that if he has anything even close to that in the first 6 months at Villa he will be out on his ear – albeit with a big, fat, pay off from Mr Lerner
In that respect it boils down to £ signs or job securityWhen it comes to passing judgement on any decision Bobby might make to go that’s also a difficult one
I’ve already said that even as someone who bleeds blue & white I would find it difficult to turn down Villa in favour of Latics if that was my job, so i can understand if he leaves
However, on the flip side he has received unstinting backing from Whelan when any other club chairman would have turfed him out long ago so part of me thinks that loyalty deserves some reward on Bobby’s by staying.
Likewise Bobby has spoken of nothing but his love for Latics since arriving, how he’s one of us etc…. And more recently he’s spoken about only allowing players to leave for clubs in European competitions. Villa don’t fall into that category, with the players likely to leave their this summer I don’t think they will next season either & Mr lerner seems to have tightened the purse strings since allowing O’Neill to splurge out – in that respect to leave at the first offer he gets would seem like somewhat of a slap in the face & more than a tad hypocritical. he does however have previous for that.My other worry is that no matter what I might think of Bobby’s managerial abilities, if he does stay I think the majority of our more sellable players will stay. If he goes i think they’ll all look to go too & then the club really will be up poo creak without a paddle

9 June 2011 at 12:59 pm #67408Good post Tyldesley.
9 June 2011 at 1:40 pm #67410I think the best thing to do is wait and see what happens.
I hope that he is using the Villa negotiations as a bargaining tool with Whelan over his own new contract here and, maybe, transfer budgets – though I don’t hold out much hope for him on that one.
It would be a shame to see him go now, having suffrered through the pain of his rebuilding of our style of play.
9 June 2011 at 2:03 pm #67411Why are people thinking he would be using this to try and get extra transfer funds off Whelan?
Bobby knows our financial situation perfectly and will be aware he gets everything we can realistically afford. He’s not going to demand we dig ourselves into more debt for him to reject Villa.
9 June 2011 at 2:09 pm #67412It would be a shame to see him go now, having suffrered through the pain of his rebuilding of our style of play.I echo your sentiment.
I would be surprised and disappointed if he did go. Having said that I shouldn’t be surprised about anything that happens where Premiership football is concerned.
