12 July 2011 at 12:07 pm #68485I think with a lone striker with the ability to run all day, chase down lost causes, put pressure on the opposition defence when they have the ball, the ability to win the ball in the air & hold it up to bring others into play (its not much to ask is it!! ;) )latics would look far more of an attacking threat than they do at the moment
Heskey?
12 July 2011 at 2:03 pm #68486Heskey?No
Whenever I saw Heskey played in that lone striker role he looked awful.
Heskey’s problem in that position was that he would win headers all day but instead of trying to hold the ball up, he always flicked it on – when played up front on his own his was flicking it on to nobody. When played up front with Owen & then Rooney for England he looked far better
He’d have probably been an ideal partner for Rodallega in his prime12 July 2011 at 8:05 pm #68495He keeps taking Rodallega out of the lone striker role & is then forced to put him back in coz all the other strikers he has bought have been complete pig swill & its a key failing of Bobby’s that he doesn’t seem to be able to see the type of forward needed to make his system work at this level.
Bobby will tell you all day long that we don’t play with one striker, we play with three. He certainly shot me down very quickly when I suggested we played with a lone striker.12 July 2011 at 10:15 pm #68496seems some have missed my point i made about sammon and rodallega.
we looked good when they both plyed last season, for me we need sammon up front with rodallega playing behind

I don’t think its been missed at all, & yes in the brief periods that they played together in a more traditional “2 up front” system it did seem to work okay
However as long as Bobby has a hole in his bum he will not play that system (regularly, from the start & as his preferred option anyway) so discussion of it seems (to me at least) irrelevant & a waste of time13 July 2011 at 12:32 pm #68518Bobby will tell you all day long that we don’t play with one striker, we play with three. Bobby can tell me that the moon is made of green cheese but it doesn’t mean that it is[/quote]
But if he was the man who worked with that moon on a daily basis, gave instructions to the moon, and ultimately decided how that moon lined up with other moons, I be inclined to believe him if he said it was made of cream cheese as opposed to what I’d observed whilst watching the telly or through my telescope.13 July 2011 at 3:16 pm #68519But if he was the man who worked with that moon on a daily basis, gave instructions to the moon, and ultimately decided how that moon lined up with other moons, I be inclined to believe him if he said it was made of cream cheese as opposed to what I’d observed whilst watching the telly or through my telescope.Does the nursery rhyme say “the moon is made of cream cheese”?? I was sure I was taught it was green cheese!!
Back to Bobby, he plays with 1 striker – its as plain as the nose on his face. To say he plays with 3 strikers is nonsense.
You don’t need to work with Bobby, receive instructions from him or be told where to line up by him, let alone watch it at the ground as opposed to on your telly to see the system he plays.
If they do indeed play with 3 strikers then the amount of times Rodallega/Sammon/Di Santo/Boselli/Scotland/Moreno are isolated on their own against 4 defenders or are the only player in the box waiting to receive a cross means 2 people somewhere aren’t doing their job & haven’t been doing it for the last 2 seasons3 strikers?? we’ll be getting told that black is white next coz Bobby says it is.
13 July 2011 at 3:22 pm #685213 strikers?? we’ll be getting told that black is white next coz Bobby says it is.Where did I, or Bobby, say that we were actually any good at playing with three strikers? I never claimed that it doesn’t end up sometimes (ok, most times) looking as if we a re playing with just one. :D
In actual fact, he said three forward players, not out and out strikers, which is slightly more plausible.
13 July 2011 at 3:58 pm #68523Martinez: I’ve got ten quid in my hand.
Supporter: No you’ve not, you’ve got two fivers.
Martinez: Yes, that’s ten quid.
Supporter: No it’s not, a ten pound note is ten quid. That’s two fivers.
Martinez: If I hold one fiver in my left hand, and one in my right hand, I have a fiver in each hand. When I put them together, that’s ten quid.
Supporter: No it’s not. It’s still two fivers….
It’s all opinions. Players coming in from wide when in an offensive position are the extra attacking players in Martinez’s opinion, but they are merely wingers cutting inside in some other people’s opinion.

They aren’t strikers though – and that’s not just being pedantic. A striker/centre forward has a specific task (at a very basic level its win the ball, hold it up/lay it off, get in the box, score).
The roles that N’Zogbia or Moses or whoever play out wide are far more than that & they have often been too busy doing those other roles to be able to commit to going forward.
The only striker is the spear head of that 4-5-1 formation. That’s not just at Latics that’s at whichever team plays itI’m not knocking 4-5-1 as a system coz it can work really well & has done at times for Latics but the initial point was that Rodallega is not equipped for that spearhead role.
The second point was Bobby can say he plays with 3 strikers till he’s blue in the face but he doesn’t he plays with one – regardless of whether he has a tenner or 2 fivers in his hand!! ;)13 July 2011 at 7:11 pm #68529The second point was Bobby can say he plays with 3 strikers till he’s blue in the face but he doesn’t he plays with one – regardless of whether he has a tenner or 2 fivers in his hand!! ;)I’ll type this again in case I did it in white on a white background before.

Griff – I didn’t see your post when I replied to Standish.
I’d still take a bit of an issue with what Bobby said though – you said he jumped down your throat when you suggested we play with a lone striker. Whichever way you look at it, the team does play with a lone striker & 2 other forward players whose job it is (allegedly!!! ;) ) to get in the box when we have the ball in the opposition half. There’s a difference :happy-partydance: :happy-partydance:
Not saying how many strikers I think he should have on the pitch or which system works better but he does only have 1 striker so I aint sure how he can take issue with someone saying that we do
You can put lipstick on a pig, but its still a pig!!From another post of yours – “Where did I, or Bobby, say that we were actually any good at playing with three strikers?”
Where did I say that you did say that?? ;) -
