      Franz Vatenbauer says…..

As a player myself, and later a manager, I was always open to changing styles, depending on opposition and the situation. I always thought, and said, that the aim should be to get that ball in the box as much as possible. As a player, I played as a defensive midfielder/centre back. We played 4-4-2 and had two fast wingers. I used to say to them before games “when I get the ball, get ready to go” and basically, every time I got the ball, I launched a diagnal ball, aiming for the corner of the penalty area, with back-spin on. The winger would get on it, cross the ball. and more often than not we’d score. Simple.

Fook me Vat is there anything you are not dead good at?

Welcome back to the board matey, your as mad as a fish but you do make me chuckle! ;)

Think about it, if I was ‘dead good’ as you put it, would I be sat here conversing with you? Or would I be nailing some pop star in some 5 star in London? :o
Good? Fair to middlin. Dirty? Yep. Wouldn’t last 5 mins now. My marking techniques were more ‘Claudio Gentile’ than ‘John Terry’, put it that way, LOL. If someone got past me, they got launched. Dedicated? I was until I started on the ale at about 15, then it’s birds….and so on and so forth.

I never said I was good, I merely gave an example that suggested other styles can be effective. Remember, both Forest, under Cloughie, and West Ham, have been relegated whilst playing ‘good football’.

Any football is good……as long as you win. We can’t all be Brazil ’70.

Well, we can’t agree on everything, can we?

I just don’t see why a side HAS to play a ‘set style’.

Surely you need to adapt and change……

        Just ask Mick McCarthy. :D

I’m not referring to not being able to change tactics. I have said many times that – in my opinion – the football we played under Bruce was awful and I would rather lose 4-3 or 3-2 trying to play prettily than watch that.

so are you telling me that this 50 sideway passes without one telling foward pass is pretty ?

we’ll not go into the snail pace that we move the ball about as well, some of the long ball stuff last season was not very good, but we seem to do it just as much as soon as the heads have dropped.

Take your usual hysterical exaggeration out of it and I would say yes it is, certainly prettier than full backs and goalkeeper lumping it as far and high as they can at every given opportunity.

I’m not saying we are very good at it yet, but i prefer it, yes.

ive been waiting for someone to come out with this perceived rubbish, the addage if people say it long and loud enough the masses will start to believe it seems to have taken effect on you

i watched a recording of the the full game against liverpool yesterday, and noticed we were passing back to kirkland alot and hoofing it upfield so me being the sad barsteward i am i watched again at 4X speed and counted how many times we did it well it was 26 times, now is that more or less than bruce’s teams did ?

It certainly is sad. But you have picked one game, when we are up against a very good team. (And dont give me the worst Liverpool team for 40 years).

In total, I perceive that we do it an awful lot less than we did under Bruce.

If you knew me, by the way, you would know that i don’t really let anyone elses views or opoinions get in the way of my own, so I would have to say you have judged this wrong.

You are just like the wife – making assumptions about how I think and what I do, and getting it hopelessly wrong most of the time. :)

You have to be kidding, mate! I’d rather nail my foot to the floor.

Plus, I’ll be starting my pre-match entertainment about 1pm and will be in no fit state to count, or even stand.

I never said we don’t, just that we do it less than we used to.

And if Bramble did anything other than hoof it, I would give him a serious bollocking :D
