Last day survival isn’t progress. Progress would be finishing higher in the league.
Well seeing as we finished 16th surviving on the final day and the season after finished 15th surviving with a game to spare, then I’d say we did better. Would you not?
I’m far from our Bobby’s biggest fan but (taking his first season as a starting point) hasn’t Latics end of season points tally increased every season he has been in charge.
Whether this trend will continue this season remains to be seen but I’d call an increased points tally a sign of progress
Surely progress isnt just measured by points tally and league positions.Any club the size of ours is constantly going to struggle on the field.Im not saying Roberto is a great manager, ive always stated I would have rather him have a more experienced backup than Jonesy and Barrow. But as a Club man I reckon the lad has been superb.Obviously most fans want it to happen on the pitch week in week out regardless of the risks or consequencies.Bobby however has showed that Mr Whelans brilliant acumen has rubbed off on himself.Surely even the darkest of darksiders would,nt want us to go the way of Portsmouth at the risk of a quick fix spending spree.QPR have massive wage bills and their debt is spiralling out of control and will be in real peril if they go down so has flashing the cash and offering stupid high wages done them any good?.So if you really think we are going backwards under Bobby maybe we should count our blessings compared to some ;)
In the time Bobby has been manager of Wigan Athletic
Rangers have folded and reappeared in Scottish Div 3
Portsmouth have gone into meltdown and into the lower echelons of the football league
Birmingham City have become the new Portsmouth
Coventry have gone a similar way and they were even talking about groundsharing with Hinckley a while back
Wolves have enormous money problems and it may become critical
QPR have lost the plot and with a smaller gate than ours are heading straight down the Portsmouth route
Many more clubs too many to mention are facing financial heartache in the months to come
WIGAN ATHLETIC HAVE REDUCED THE CLUBS DEBT AND ARE HEADING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION……………………….Progress methinks.

That’s gone way over the heads of some of the posters on here.
We already have the players who can make it work but for various reasons they are not performing to the best of their abilities and so questions must be asked rather than sticking our heads in the sand and saying ” Yeah but look how far we have come ” !

I would sorta agree with the first bit of that Fil, if you had put the word “consistently” after the word “performing”.

I remember quite a while back now saying that Ali Habsi needed some healthy competition for the keepers jersey and that was before the new lad came and I was shot down for it ! Now we have the new lad, due to Ali Habsi’s continued patchy form why not give the new lad a start but somehow I cant see RM doing it. Certain fans will just come back with ” You are not a football manager ” or ” Have you been playing FIFA again ” Now that to me is a cop out of a reply ! At the end of the day I want us to succeed and I enjoy the debates and banter on here that I have with certain posters but I am not a glory seeker ( If I was I certainly wouldn’t be here would I ! ) and I WILL be around whichever division we will be in and I WILL be kicking off still at underachievers ! Why do you insist on measuring everything by the league table? As many have pointed out on many occasions, there are many measures of the progress of a football club.
