19 August 2015 at 12:02 am #144199…………..Most shocking was the beginning of his relegation season ……….
Also known as “his FA Cup winning season ……the greatest ever season in the history of Wigan Athletic FC”.
;)
19 August 2015 at 1:48 am #144203I wouldn’t describe it as our greatest ever season. It was a pretty dismal season but the FA Cup win was our greatest ever achievement as a club and also probably the greatest ever achievement by a manager. From Huddersfield onwards Bob got the tactics spot on, it would be silly to argue against that and as an ex player we were all so proud of his and the clubs great achievement. However in the league the story was a really dismal one and one where given the opportunity the players could have achieved more but that is just an opinion and others would not agree with that and I respect that.
Meanwhile we have to do something on the field not to be worried about Scunthorpe or anyone else in League 1. Surely there must be a way to play with two strikers and still play a passing game and equally surely there must be a way to entertain and win and still look good as a footballing side. Others have done this like Norwich Bournemouth and Watford last season and Burnley and Leicester the previous year. Milton Keynes played with Grigg as a lone striker last season and scored for fun and Bristol City pissed the league playing positive football. We have all these models to look at so are there no videos around for our coaches to study?19 August 2015 at 1:54 am #144204Yet as dull as it was he managed to keep us in the Premier League for five seasons whilst reducing the wage bill as instructed to make the club self sufficient almost, win the FA Cup and beat the likes of Utd, Arsenal (twice), Chelsea, Liverpool (twice) and of course City.
Yes I was bored too.
Of course we lost more than we won, we were Wigan Athletic in the Premier League.
19 August 2015 at 2:01 am #144205Like the famous Shankly or Paisley once said.what we done before has gone. Its what we do now. :cheer:
19 August 2015 at 3:49 am #144208Thing is with Bob though we used to lose a lot too. Set out for a draw and in the end still lost. With Paul Jewell we played some of the best football during a most memorable period in Latics history.Paul Jewell will forever be remembered and revered for getting us to the Premier League and that first memorable season (half a season really) when we slugged it out with the big boys.
Well not really the big boys because he is on record as saying he wrote off the games against Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Man Utd and set up for damage limitation. That’s eight games and 24 points which he discarded.
At least Martinez had a go. We got stuffed a few times but also saw some of the most memorable games ever witnessed by Latics fans culminating in that unbelievable FA Cup win.Boring it may have been but at least he tried. When he got it right they were never to be forgotten games. Jewell never even tried.
19 August 2015 at 5:30 am #144209The quote of all time “Jewell never even tried”
FFS. Never heard such crap.
Winning league one with all those goals and points alone was one of the greatest ever achievements from a Latics manager. He never tried against the big boys though but kept us up twice, the first time with quite a few of those league one winning heroes. Don’t suppose he tried against Arsenal in the League Cup either. Paul Jewell our greatest ever manager.19 August 2015 at 5:36 am #144210And he wrote off in the sense that everyone in the world would expect us to lose. Wrote off in the sense that any point gained against them would be a bonus.

Just 25 goals conceded in 46 games.19 August 2015 at 2:01 pm #144213Clean sheets and goals and entertaining football too.
19 August 2015 at 2:13 pm #144214Clean sheets and goals and entertaining football too.Not in that season. We won many games 1-0 and were extremely strong at the back.
The Duke was our top scorer with 15 goals and our 68 goals total was just average. It was only when we went up to the Championship that I would say we became more entertaining. Jewell built his team from the back first and then focused on attacking.

Well Jewell got us a top half league table finish and all that without even trying! Not bad in my books. There is no doubt that the style Martinez tried to play is more entertaining but only when implemented properly, we didn’t have the class of players to do such a thing and so the majority of the time it was dull, very dull! Martinez was too stubborn for his own good and was bereft of a contingency plan when needed! I am quite looking forward to Everton’s game with City to see if he can continue to be the proverbial thorn in their side. City have come out of their corner fighting this season and Everton seemed fairly effective against Southampton and so it should be a good game but I digress!
The lower you drop in football the more you need to go back to basics and that in my humble view is what GC should be doing this season. Two solid centre halfs with a no nonsense attitude, a midfield willing to work it’s bollocks off and a couple of lads up top who are nothing short of telepathic, both with an eye for goal! Playing it out from the back with our current personnel is a recipe for disaster!19 August 2015 at 2:56 pm #144219Just reading that you win games with clean sheets made me laugh, if you don’t score but you have clean sheets every game finishes 0-0. Of course clean sheets help but it’s always scoring the most goals in a game ,which will be the name of the game.

Are you saying then that winning 1-0 cannot be an entertaining game? I remember when we played Aston Villa at home and it was 0-0 at full time. Probably one of the best, most entertaining games of football I’ve ever seen.

Of course 0-0 or 1-0 can be entertaining in isolation, but I am talking about a full season.
We lost 1-0 to Chelsea in our first game in the Prem. Even taking away the occassion it was entertaining for me.My point was that we won League 1 with a strong defence, not by scoring loads of goals and neither by playing free flowing football. That is how I remember it and there is nothing wrong with that. It was what we needed at the time. 1 goal would probably win a game and 2 goals certainly would.
As Jewell added to his team (Bullard, Roberts etc), our fast attacking play became more visible. Fast counter attacking goals at Leeds, West Ham and Ipswich stick in my mind.
We are at a point of rebuilding again. Caldwell needs to decide what is going to be the core strength of his team and build from there.
At the moment I don’t think we can see what that is. We aren’t scoring goals and we might keep a clean sheet if we are lucky. -
