Taken from an interview at the back end of 2006. (This also included Spurs making it 10 games to be written off).

Recalling a conversation he had with former Charlton manager Alan Curbishley last season, Jewell added: ‘He told me he looked upon the season as a 28-game season.

‘A lot of teams outside the top five just write off the other 10 games, which might be a negative attitude to some people, but it’s also a realistic one.

In defence of Jewell he wasn’t the only manager thinking this way. The point I was trying to make was that Martinez didn’t adopt that attitude and as a result we were presented with some unforgettable games.

………….Well Jewell got us a top half league table finish and all that without even trying! …………..

………………. and then he followed that up by almost getting us relegated before jumping ship.[/quote]I remember Steve Mc Claren being branded a Judas… When he left Boro for the ENGLAND JOB.Then owd brown shoes took it to another level. If Jewell had took us down. He would have stayed and done his best to get us back up.The only reason brown shoes was not potted due to Wheelliebin wanting to cash in on what He paid Swansea for him. Also a lot of fans seem to see their arse. When Wheelliebin said if Bobby goes i go.

It is easy to judge Jewell’s approeach 10 years later and after 8 years in the Premier League.

He had a team with great momentum and that took us to 10th in the first season.
We weren’t expected to even stay up and we definitely had an inferiority complex against a well established top 4. That is why he would write off such games.

A manager in surivial mode might think like Jewell and focus on taking points from relegation rivals.
A mid-table manager might take the Martinez approach. Great when it works, but it is not much good if you beat Chelsea and lose to a team in the bottom 3.
