There are over 90 clubs in the pyramid system and only a small percentage of them see success and hardly any see the scale of our own amazing recent history. We had no right to reach the Premier league no right to reach the League cup final or play in Europe and we certainly had no right to shock the World in 2013. I have always been proud of the Latics long before 2005 and since then even more so. What the hell do some of you expect from this club ffs?. Nobody has seen what we have and I doubt our story will ever be bettered. Just digest exactly what this barmy little club has done and im sorry but if you cannot feel the utmost pride at being a Latics fan then maybe you should become a glory hunter at the scum or City.

Totally agree. Great post. I’ve been unfortunate enough to have only been following WAFC for about 8 years, but in that time I’ve really had a sense of the amazing journey you describe. I get hAcked off when I hear all the accolades for Leicester …. I think the WAFC journey is more amazing. RELATIVELY WAFC is a small and poor club; it has done very well.

We were a Prem side in our 8th consecutive season, not quite the ‘Roy Of The Rovers’ story some make out in my book! Of course City had spent millions upon millions on their squad and yes they were long odds on favourites but the FA Cup provides shocks from time to time! If we had been in a lower division then yeah but come on, we were established in the top flight of English football! Now I know that we struggled the majority of the time in the Prem and eventually capitulated but I do think from our time spent in the Prem that we should now actually be a club that should be able to hold it’s own in the Championship! Alas, since our fall from grace there has been a plethora of bad business dealings and decisions by the club, some quite eye opening and in my opinion bordering on amateuristic! We are not that ‘Little Wigan’ anymore, we have a stadium that holds about 25000 and the last 15 years have seen Mr Whelan’s cash injection come to fruition! I just think that handled better the club could be doing a hell of a lot better than what it has been. Forget the days of old, they are history! Forward thinking is the way forward ( See what I did there!)

        See you at Goole !

That means we were getting 30,000 home fans into 20,000 home seats. And still they said our support was rubbish!

I find it quite pathetic that so called fans seem to dismiss the achievement of winning the FA Cup as nothing particularly special. Yes we were enjoying our eighth season in the PL but for most of that time were we escaping relegation by the skin of our teeth, so hardly established in that sense.

Leaving aside Portsmouth’s win in 2008 when they were spending mega bucks at the time and finished 8th in the league, which incidentally bankrupt the club and who are now languishing in the 4th tier, the last time an unfashionable club won the cup was Wimbledon in 1988, some 25 years earlier. That was before the PL was invented and the billionaires got involved so hardly a good comparison.

So until another unfashionable “established” PL club comes along and wins the thing – and it won’t happen this season – I will consider our FA Cup win to be up there as one of the all-time remarkable achievements.

Spot on here – there can be no comparison.

Wimbledon won it when there was no Sky money to be shared out amongst the top flight clubs, no overseas broadcasting rights to be shared amongst the top flight clubs, no sponsorship of the FA Cup. The financial success or failure of any club at that time was down to gate receipts and player trading.

Wimbledon finished 7th just behind Arsenal and above Spurs,Chelsea and Newcastle. They were very competitive that season and difficult to beat. I never fully understand why it is seen as a massive upset.

Correct, and that isn’t counting all those “fans” who lined the streets for the parade.

Course it was egg but the financial gulf between them and Wimbledon and us when we best City are worlds apart. Also the Dons were very lucky on the day whereas we were the best team on the day and deservedly won it.

That Liverpool team was a bit special though.

Which is why the Wimbledon win was all the more remarkable. Liverpool had lost twice in the league all season and won the title by 9 points. As English clubs were banned from Europe, they simply had nothing to play for in that Final, which suited Wimbledon – a club spending their 2nd season in the top flight and their 11th in the football league.

Nuneaton – Your version of the 2013 game seems at odds with the stats as to who was the better side. Man City (who had already qualified for the Champions League and were about to change their manager) had 12 shots on target that game (against Wigan’s 7) and 52% possession.

52% gets the country out of the EU, so it must be a valid stat!

The similarity between 2013 and 1988 is that both winners were playing sides who, whilst winning would have been nice, wasn’t essential to European entry.
