That would make them a cheaper version that VFL Wolfsburg then. :D

In all honesty, good luck to him. Love to see him re-emerge. He was led astray by a greedy git of an agent, and was said to be “in tears” the day he said his goodbyes. Maybe he should have been a bit stronger? Maybe Jason Roberts should have ‘advised him’? But hadn’t they had a bit of a fall out?

Whatever you say, he was still one of the best strikers we’ve ever had. I think people soon forget. I’d swap him for Scotland tomorrow. :o

That’s not the most stupid shout ever.

Can you see Whelan letting him back in the club though?

          Griff,

I did think a couple of weeks ago, when I heard that Watford would let him go for £300.000 that we’d be daft not to take a punt on him. You’ll know as well as I do, that for some reason, some players can only play well at certain clubs. I don’t know why this is, but it does happen.

However, the club is so different now, to when he was here. The team is completely different, as is the staff, apart from a couple, such as Cribley. So maybe he would’nt get the ‘home’ factor?

£300.000 doesn’t seem a risk though, considering the money we have wasted on the likes of Aghahowa and King, does it? Love to see him in our team.

Said it before and I’ll say it again, Ellington to West Brom was the biggest single mistake regarding transfers I’ve ever seen a Latics player make….well done Nathan

Seems it was all about ££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££ for Ellington, and the likes of Roberts, Bullard etc later on. They tried the “please sir can I have some more trick with Whelan” after a good season and he wasnt having it as usual. Shame he couldn’t have been offered a decent rise to stay after all the goals he got but then his agent advised him terribly and Bryan Robson might have been a great player but he was an awful manager.
Ellington and Roberts would have been our Wright & Bright that first season, individually decent but combined they could have been unplayable, we didn’t do so bad without him but he didnt do his reputation no good

Roberts set up a good amount of Ellington’s goals, would far sooner see JR return here, think he would link up well with Hugo. Have to agree though at £300000 Duke would have been a bargain.

Thats exactly what I mean Scholes….anyone who wants to go and play under Bryan Robson, is quite clearly an idiot, not to mention that he went from 1 club that would have been happy to finish 17th to another equally happy to finish 17th that season.

Why not get them BOTH back?

We could do worse……couldn’t we? Wouldn’t cost much, and at the least we’d add a strong, hustling, front man, and some variety to a small squad. Would be a no-brainer for me. How ghood could J.R. be in that lone role, as well?

I don’t want us signing another ‘Carlos Kickaball’, who doesn’t start scoring until April, and then scores a few at the start of next season, and is then gone in January. ‘Kin fed up on it. (I’m expecting offers for Rodallega)

Robert’s, Ellington, Rodallega (if he stays), and Scotland. That’s not bad.

If I remember rightly, according to Ellington, Latics offered him a deal that had the possibility of earning him more than the deal he signed at WBA. However understandably Latics wanted his earnings linked to performances, goals, win bonuses etc.. & he wanted it all up front. From what I can gather WBA offered him a much bigger “basic” package & he took that
I said at the time that I thought Latics/Whelan/Jewell had done exactly the right thing especially when you bear in mind how much his form used to go from highs to lows & judging by how his career has nose dived since he left & think they’ve been proved right.
The others such as Bullard & Roberts all took new deals that were linked to how well they performed & they justified it. Ellington I don’t think had that confidence in himself – either that or he just felt he deserved a wopping great contract whether he “earned” it or not

PS – why the f00k anyone would want a striker who has stunk to high heaven for the last 5 years back at this club?? he made his bed now let him lie in it. he is not good enough now – no matter how little he would cost

Agree with most things on here apart from Roberts. We should have paid Roberts near what he wanted. The guy is a legend and we still haven’t replaced him with someone who has the power and the presence up front.

Ellington was as good as Roberts would let him be. I don’t think he was the best striker we’ve had, but when he was with Roberts, it was telepathy…

….Paul Jewell and Bobby Campbell, Graham Jones and Graham Lancashire, Phil Daily and Don Page, Mark Leonard and….oh, that doesn’t work!!

Incidentally, who would you say the best Wigan Athletic striker partnership consisted of???

                    #15874

You can usually guess peoples ages by the music they listen to and their opinions on who was the best guitarist they ever heard, or the best footballer they ever saw etc.

I am not entirely sure why this is, it could be that they are not open-minded or that they prefer to live in a bygone age. Older people like myself are notorious for living in the past and have difficulty accepting the fact that Bert Weedon, Jimmy Hendrix or Eric Clapton are no longer the best guitarists that ever lived. The truth of the matter is that they were the best around in their time, but now there are sixteen year old kids that would give them a run for their money.

Nathan Ellington and Jason Roberts were good for Wigan when they were here but their time has been and gone. We have moved on and are now looking to sign players of a higher calibre (cue Jason Scotland appreciation society). As much as I liked Nathan Ellington and Jason Roberts, they were never as good as some people appear to remember.
