Over 100 players and 5 managers since relegation from Premier League. Is it any wonder we are in this position?
I said it at the beginning of this season, why not give the core of that promotion winning team a shot at the Championship? But instead made wholesale changes.13 March 2017 at 4:53 pm #156735Same friggin problem still exists Barrow. Don’t expect anything to change drastically in the style of play, back to Bobbytics. No chance now of survival in afraid guys.

I’d argue the opposite, in that too much faith was put in key players from last season to be as effective at a higher level & that decision was either totally complacent or completely stupid.
With the exception of Le Fondre, Caldwell relied on the same forwards as last season & 3 of them had been released/sold from Championship clubs previously for not being up to that level (Grigg, Jacobs & Wildschut). It was plain last year that the defence allowed the opposition too many chances (normally through mistakes) and so the likes of Pearce needed to be moved on (just like Jewell jettisoned Breckin & Eaden when we got promoted to the top flight) & I think that decision has been justified with how strong the back line has been in general.
Jaaskeleinen needed competition for his spot but the mistake was bringing in Bogdan
There was also a mistake in not utilising Morsy properly & allowing him to leave. Gomez was a good decision to bring back & then wasn’t utilised in a system to suit him. Powell has just never been fitBut no I don’t think wholesale changes were the mistake coz I don’t think that that many were made
13 March 2017 at 6:15 pm #156750Maybe bobbytics might work, we have a decent defence but cant score – bobby set us up to attack we were just p1$$ poor at the back.. Bobbytics wins hands down above anything we have unfortunately had to witness recently.
13 March 2017 at 6:32 pm #156756Summer: 14 players in, 10 players out.
If that isn’t the definition of wholesale changes, I don’t know what is. Then we back it up with January window – 13 players in, 8 players out.
If that doesn’t convince you, compare the XI that started the last ‘competitive’ game in league one, Blackpool away, with the XI that started the last game.
Jussi, Wabara, Daniels, Morgan, Warnock, Morsy, Perkins, Power, McCann, Grigg, Jacobs.
Gilks, Connolly, Buxton, Burn, Warnock, Hanson, Perkins, Gilbey, Obertan, Jacobs, Bogle.
3/11 the same.

5 players changed from last game to first game, is nearly half a team not wholesale?
Pearce was better than Buxton is, Morsy, Colclough, McAleney, Vuckic and Wabara should have been kept here and involved from the start. We would be better off than we are now.13 March 2017 at 6:50 pm #1567612014/15 all over again

That example is deliberately selective & you know it is!!
For example, Morsy would have played on Saturday if fit, Power would have played if fit, Grigg would have played if fit, Daniels would more than likely have been a regular this season (if fit), Morgan was also Joyce’s preferred centre half over Burn until he got injured.
Not to mention the fact that Wabara was offered a contract to stay (despite being in & out of the side after arriving), turned it down & the fact he hasn’t been taken on anywhere since indicates he aint that good & so needed replacing anyway.
Also the vast majority of those brought in (both in the summer & now) have barely been used. Likewise many of those who left last summer were fringe players or players who barely got a sniff of 1st team action & so needed replacing13 March 2017 at 7:22 pm #1567645 players changed from last game to first game, is nearly half a team not wholesale?

Pearce in my opinion wasn’t up to the Championship & showed as much when he was part of the squad that got relegated the year before & needed replacing. Buxton is (IMO) far better despite having deficiencies of his own
Colclough rarely started when we were in Lge 1 & on the occasions I saw him I could see why. He then went to MK Dons & wasn’t used as a regular starter there either, so quite why you consider that he should have been starting at Latics in a division above I don’t know.
Wabara – again in & out of the side & turned down a contract offer to stay. Came back on trial this season & wasn’t offered a deal, nor anywhere else, which indicates that he needed replacing
Vuckic – Again, rarely used by Caldwell & has played only 10 times for a team now a division below Latics so why should he have been kept on & used from the start?
McAleny – Didn’t rate him personallyThe only one that I’d agree with out of your list is Morsy which was bizarre

23 March 2017 at 3:31 pm #157192Could argue all day re individual players. Agree with some of your points, disagree with others.
Truth is, you can’t argue with the facts. Over the course of this season, 27 players in and 18 players out. That definitely is wholesale changes.
If you compare that with Burton and Barnsley who came up with us and take into account we probably had more money to spend, then you have to say that is where it went wrong (Joyce aside – that was an absolute shambles in itself). More quality and less quantity needed.
23 March 2017 at 5:06 pm #157198The comings & goings of players at our club is a definite factor in our current predicament.

Man City went through a stage of chopping & changing managers & players 20+ years ago and they paid the price. Fell down the leagues & took a long while to recover!!I cant understand why the board let Caldwell make so many after a successful season and a league title. I’m sure in hindsight they must regret it. We looked well on the way to coming back and I will always believe had that squad remained we would not be fighting relegation now.
23 March 2017 at 11:04 pm #157208The squad that won League 1 should have been good enough to finish above the bottom three without any additions. We also had Emyr Huws returning to the fold after his self-imposed exile, only to be flogged just as the season started.
The transfer activity in the summer was uninspiring, and did nothing to improve the strength of the squad. Player retention/recruitment is usually dealt with by the Chief Exec and/or Chairman. However JJ is still in post whilst two managers have been sacked.
23 March 2017 at 11:44 pm #157211Certainly some baffling and rank bad decisions by the club for sure since we won League One? Clear out needed in my opinion!
