I just hope it is treated with respect by locals and visiting fans. There is no reason whatsoever for it not to be treated with respect.
It was always on the cards after what he has achieved at WAFC and it is very well deserved.
I can’t wait for it to be donned with hats, scarves and flags when we get promotion next May.27 May 2015 at 2:05 am #142550Long overdue for Mr Wigan the man who has played the biggest part in the greatest football story ever told.
27 May 2015 at 2:07 am #142551Not sure how I feel about a statue….putting aside the success we’ve been fortunate enough to witness over the last 20 years, Dave Whelan’s legacy to both Wigan Athletic and Wigan RLFC is the fact that we are both still in existence and on a much better footing than would have been the case without his intervention. That and the fact that both clubs play in a stadium which was built through his ambition and finance and the contributions he had made to both clubs should be enough for us all to remember and recognise the importance of the man to professional sport in our town.
Not sure a statue is necessary but I can completely understand why it is being built.

Similarly, I doubt the Billy Boston one will last long before that gets vandalised.
27 May 2015 at 11:22 am #142553I saw a fantastic statue of David in Florence. Could it be he?
Michealangelo was ahead of his times.
Plagiarism is the best form of flattery.

^^
I think some sort of tribute would be fitting, a plaque, the permanent naming of a stand maybe but a statue?! I think it would make us look a bit silly.
