Not sure how I feel about a statue….putting aside the success we’ve been fortunate enough to witness over the last 20 years, Dave Whelan’s legacy to both Wigan Athletic and Wigan RLFC is the fact that we are both still in existence and on a much better footing than would have been the case without his intervention. That and the fact that both clubs play in a stadium which was built through his ambition and finance and the contributions he had made to both clubs should be enough for us all to remember and recognise the importance of the man to professional sport in our town.
Not sure a statue is necessary but I can completely understand why it is being built.

We already have the Wembley plaque from the FA.

A great tribute. Should be in the town centre and paid for by the council but will still be great at the front of New Springfield.
I should imagine our egg friends really have a special place in their hearts for Dave. After all he did save their bacon and give them somewhere to play after Noblot had rejected them.Who is paying for it? If the Billy Boston statue is going to cost £100,000 How much will this one cost? I’m afraid to say for every Wiganer who like him(DW) there is one who doesn’t (Orrell Rugby Union Members…) and I can see it being vandalised with two weeks of it being erected unless it’s placed in a position where no can reach it? Just been to Nottingham and there is a statue of Brian Clough in the town centre Maybe this one of DW should be placed next to the one of George Formby in the Grand Arcade…
Blackburn have a statue near the ground of Jack walker and whelan as done a similar thing with us so why not. Be good to see him holding the fa cup

What a journey!Would rather see a new pitch,decent investment in the team, a long term plan regarding a youth policy and a strategy for when the parachute money dries up.
I have seen the statues for past legendary players like Dixie Dean and Tom Finney and rightfully so as they are both probably in the top ten all time players list but a football chairman?I’m thinking of him proudly standing there, arms folded and the good leg standing on a war chest.Like this perhaps?

This is not about how well liked he is, its about what he has done for the town in particular, the football club.
There are statues of Henry viii all over the place and he was mustered for chopping his own wives heads off. :woohoo:

Club as a SPORT, and there are a lot of ‘bitter people’ who where and are, still associated with the club who blame D.W. for ruining the club and selling off their ground.
