Well, isn’t it nice to read a debate about football for once (even if some folk still had to hurl insults as part of it).

Griff – give over. I know you harbour a soft spot for Jordi, but I know plenty about football and I know misjudged substitutions when I see them. Interesting that nobody is complaining about my comments about the Chelsea subs.

In addtion, your argument for Gomez highlighted my point exactly – he didn’t even have the ball to give away, but gave away a needless FK and it led to a needless goal. And we seemed to be doing just fine without the need for Gomez.

I can understand the runout argument, but even at 3-0 up, given where we are in the season and the table, we do not have the luxury of saying we have nothing to lose and assume games are killed off.

Every point, every goal scored, every goal not conceded is sooo precious at the moment. I don’t need to remind any of you about the end of the 2006-2007 season do I?

Facts are facts – both the Chelsea and Blackpool goals came about because of our substitutions and both could have been avoided.

All I’ll say Galactic is that only you and Hindley seem to think that the substitutions were an unmitigated disaster. The rest of us will just have to agree to disagree with you.

I don’t have a particular soft spot for Gomez. I do have a bee in my bonnet about people jumping on bandwagons to slag off players because everyone else does and they can’t come up with an original thought of their own. You might not be one of them, but there’s plenty of them out there, nonetheless.

What’s the point in having Gomez if Martinez isn’t allowed to play him, well in the eyes of some?

Although I’m not always convinced by Bobby’s substitutions I can’t help but feel this is moaning just for moaning sake, we won 3-1 lets get carried away for once!!!

Duke, lets not get carried away !! I am well over the Moon that we got a vital 3pts on Saturday but I am still very wary of our predicament ! For instance, when we got beat by Chelsea and some moaned that they were there for the taking, many came back with stuff like ” One of the best teams in Europe beat us and we moan ! ” Well there is a flip side to that whereas we have just won but can I just say that Blackpool are a club in trouble and at the moment one of the worst teams in the Prem so lets not get too carried away eh ! The result proves that the boys are up for a dog fight but it doesn’t mean we have all of a sudden become a good side ! I will be at Sunderland on Saturday to hopefully see Bob get that 2 on the trot monkey off his back and even then there is still plenty of football to be played ! I am not being negative by the way, I just dont want to tempt providence by rejoicing beating a c r a p team !! 8-)

Where did I say that the subs were an unmitigated disaster? All I said was that I thought we could have come out of those games slightly better had we made more sensible substitutions.

My post was a criticism of the tactics, not the players.

I’ve always been a fence sitter under this current managerial regime, acknowledging the bad and the good, and that’s not going change whether we win/lose, stay up/go down.

Loire Drive, Galactic. Ask for Jonathan Jackson. They clearly need a man of your technical nous to steer us out of this predicament ;)

I can see your point Fil, I really can. Yet to try and equal out the cynicism on this board I must go wild and say that every team about us will get done for match fixing and the Premier League will have no choice but to hand the Latics the title.

All this sprung from one win against a poor side, funny old game isn’t it?

Well my current ” mild optimism ” is based on the last two and a bit months and not just Saturday’s game. We now look like a half decent side and are actually going into all games thinking we can get something. The win against Blackpool might have been against a poor side with ever fading confidence , but it was a high pressure , must win game for us , and we came through it with ease.

Bob said he needed 3 transfer windows to sort us. Well he actually took 4 , but we are very nearly a good side. Whatever division we are in next season , I reckon we’ll kick on and be even better.

Oh , and to find fault with an 80th minute substitution when we’re 3-0 up , is truly clutching at straws.

to be fair i don’t mind gomez, but i was listening to 2nd half on wish fm on my way home from work & when i heard gomez was coming on, my first thought was “now we are taking the pi55”

                  I agree.
Saturday saw us play (and win) in exactly the manner in which the manager insists and illustrated perfectly how good it could be.

I have to day I’m glad our performances of late have improved, yet it’s points we need at this time and not just performances. On Saturday we got both but ultimately we struggle to score even when we play well which is a worry.

And we’ve been ‘on the verge of a very goos team’ in the past, then we just sold all our best players. I’m thinking after 05-06 Bullard, Chimbonda and Roberts left; and after 08-09 when Valencia, Palacios, Heskey and Cattermole left.

Even if we stay up I fear our prized assets will go (Charlie, McCarthy, Cleverley) and we’ll be back at the drawing board again.

Our recent form (and results) have been good. If you look at our last 6 games against teams in the lower half of the table we’ve won 4 and drawn 2, scoring 14 and getting 14 points. The perception of our recent results is perhaps a bit skewed as in our last 7 games we’ve played both Manchesters, Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs and we’ve still taken 8 points.

Since 1st Feb we’ve played 9 and got 12 points, comfortable mid-table form.

                      Isn’t Excel wonderful :-)

                      #63828

There’s no doubt that the team’s performance levels have improved in the last coupld of months even if that hasn’t been refelected points wise (though as The Duke points out who we’ve played in that period has to be taken into account)

The key now that a good performance has also been reflected in the result is to follow that up & sustain it.

We’ve been here plenty of times over the last 2 seasons where the team has put in good performances & got the result too which in turn has increased supporters belief that “this is the turning point” & then its been followed by some complete bilge:
Beat Villa then lost to Wolves
Beat Chelsea then lost to Hull
Beat Burnley & then got wolloped by Portsmouth
Beat Sunderland & then threw a game away against Brum
Beat Liverpool & then got battered by Bolton
Beat Arsenal & then conceded 13 goals in the next 3 games
Beat WBA then chucked the game away against Newcastle
Beat Wolves & then didn’t win for 8 games

Admittedly it looks nowhere near as bad this season as it did last season when looked at like that but, even a committed dark sider like me can see some light at the end of the tunnel BUT it’ll take some form of sustained run of results before I’ll start to be optimistic that the drop can be avoided

Just got back from North East and I must say that was an awful awful display ! Sunderland were ravaged by injuries, had picked up 1 point from their last 9 games and had scored just 2 goals in 9 and yet we made them look like Brazil ! Every player except Al Habsi ( Goals were not his fault ) were dire beyond belief with special mentions going to Hugo and Diame !! Is it any wonder we have not won 2 on the bounce under Martinez as he proved again yesterday that he is tactically inept when it comes to the proverbial ” Plan B ” !! It is performances like that that have me thinking we are doomed and my ” One swallow doesnt make a Summer ” quote was rightfully justified ! I honestly believe that if we go down Martinez will continue to produce naive and clueless tactics and we will struggle ! Sunderland were no more than Championship class yesterday and they mullered us ! Is it any wonder why I cant muster up any positivity with this fella in charge ! :angry-banghead:
