Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has revealed that midfielder Mohamed Diame has battled with the condition “sudden death syndrome” to reach the Premier League.
Whelan saluted the player’s after he learned at an early age there was a 10,000-1 chance his heart could stop beating at any time.
Despite his condition, Latics manager Roberto Martinez signed Diame without reservation, taking him from the lower divisions of Spanish football.
Whelan told the Manchester Evening News: “I met the lad and he said his life was football. I couldn’t help but admire his courage.
“He wasn’t prepared to let this sudden death syndrome stop him from becoming a footballer.
“It was clear all Momo wanted to do was to be out there having the chance to show what he could offer.
“His refreshing, positive attitude and outlook is wonderful. Lads like this deserve any success coming their way.”
