One of the worst performances I have ever seen from a Latics team in the 43 years I have been watching them!
The third goal did it for me , Sunderland took up walking football because it was that easy to score a goal.
A senses of the dreadful 2016-17 season is in my nostrils as I write this.30 December 2022 at 12:33 pm #197740Thankfully I couldn’t go last night. Sounds like I dodged a bullet!
There is a positive to take from last night….we can’t drop down the table on Monday
30 December 2022 at 1:28 pm #197742I guess it must have been an awful showing as Sunderlands starting XI had 7 of the regulars either out or on the bench:
Gooch
Batth
Cirkin
Evans
Pritchard
Roberts
StewartFrom an outsider looking in, you were woeful in the first half, lucky to be level, started the 2nd half in a far more physical manner and got at us for about 15 mins, then when Stewart & Roberts came on, you couldn’t cope with the pass and move game and physicality was irrelevant. The 3rd goal was exactly what happens when plodders run out of puff and the 4th was pure class.
McLean is a liability against Sunderland as he can’t cope with the abuse and loses his head. There was one occasion last night where he chased the ball from east to west stand, only for us to quickly move it back and gallop down the right unchallenged.
30 December 2022 at 6:22 pm #197746We had injury problems of our own ,notably playing a YTS lad in the centre of defence who went off injured early on ( don’t know how the Sunderland player got away with at least a booking ). We were on top in the second half until the soft penalty incident ,our heads visibly dropped .It was not so much your pass and move I think it was more a case that some of our players worryingly just threw the towel in. The third goal was just embarrassing ,the forth was a good strike but he really should have been closed down earlier in the move. Really poor from us as bad as we have been all season ,some harsh words need to be said and some new recruits need to be on board early in the transfer window.
30 December 2022 at 6:31 pm #197747Pritchard the shithousing prick hobbled off injured. Cheating get.
30 December 2022 at 6:34 pm #197748Never seen an injured player who was off the pitch roll on the pitch to get a game stopped before.

Please tell me you werent the fella in ES8 who spent the next 50 minutes shouting at Simms and the ref over the challenge eventually to lose his voice. I was sat looking directly at the penalty spot and whilst there was contact, it came about because of a shit touch by the lad who mis-controlled it so that Simms had a chance to get the ball.
And the penalty wasnt soft – Roberts was cut in half by a crude challenge and I didnt see much of a protest from the home side. Nobody near me (80 yards away) knew what it had been given for at the time, but everyone accepted that it must’ve been a pen because of the lack of protest.
30 December 2022 at 10:41 pm #197751No , not guilty I was more or less directly opposite in the west stand. It looked late and dangerous to me and there were plenty of people near me giving the ref stick for at least not talking to the player. I have looked again at the penalty and yes it was a spot kick but at the time it was soft in the sense that nobody claimed for it and had that passage of play continued I doubt very much if anything would have been said. It’s the kind of penalty we never seem to get.It was definitely the turning point of the game though ,our heads dropped Sunderland were back on a high and started knocking the ball around whereas a few minutes earlier they were on the back foot and happy to kick it into row Z.
However ,no excuses, a fifteen minute purple patch does not mask over the massive problems we currently have ,we were well beaten.30 December 2022 at 11:28 pm #197753https://safc.com/news/team-news/2022/december/wigan-athletic/full-90-vs-wigan-athletic
Have a look – around the 7 min mark. Two things stick out for me:
1. The first touch by the lad was shit and invited a tackle. It was clumsy, but the ball was there to be won.
2. The guy who went on to berate Ellis Simms for the tackle got the wrong bloke. If I was woke, I’d be suggesting he was a racist!
Fast forward to the 10:23 and look at McLean’s tackle. Now that was malicious.
30 December 2022 at 11:50 pm #197755Sorry Mutty but that just confirms my thoughts that it was a terrible tackle. It was a poor touch but the lad was reckless going in like that ,deserved at the very least a yellow probably a red. How the ref did not even speak to the Sunderland player is beyond me. As for McClean , he was rightly booked but if you notice he was pointing back to the previous incident in the Wigan penalty area that incensed the Wigan players and resulted in young Hughes going off injured.

Game was already stopped because of the 2nd goal. He went off before you’d kicked off again.

So its ok to make a malicious challenge because of a mistimed challenge? And what about Lang’s slap on O’Nien when he shepherded the ball out for a goal kick? Another day that could have been a red card and a three match ban for violent conduct. Some players would have gone down like a sack of spuds to get the opponent sent off there.
McLean is a liability when the crowd are on his back. Perhaps Kolo didnt get the message “Dont play him against Sunderland cos their fans will properly rile him up and he’ll react”. Still, wont be a problem any more as I doubt I’ll have the pleasure of seeing him taking a hiding on and off the pitch again. Horrible, horrible shithouse of a player. Three things made last night sweet – him, SSB and Bullitt.

No , your missing the point . It was not a mistimed challenge , it was completely reckless and resulted in the lad going off injured. McClean was in the wrong but he did get booked, the Sunderland player got off Scot free.

Mutty…do us a favour and fuck off!
Nobody cares what you think. You offer nothing in terms of ‘banter’ so do one.
31 December 2022 at 9:19 am #197762We are very much IN THE SHIT.
Whilst it seems harsh to aim too much blame at KT, he was part of the problem the other night. That said, we could have Mourinho or Pep here and I don’t think even they could get anything out of this lot.
It seems we have got a bunch of players who arent that intelligent, or skilful. Take Max Power. Absolutely stealing a living. In his own head, he’s a good player. No, he really isn’t. Can’t get a free kick beyond a one man wall, and his corners are usually awful as well. He has GONE as a player. So has McClean. I’ve loved McClean, his passion and drive…but his legs have gone. Age has caught up with him and for his sake, the sooner he returns to Derry, the better. The whole anti IRA thing is becoming an unwanted sideshow. Its getting tiresome, as we have much bigger concerns.
Callum Lang, spends more time on the floor than anything. Lacks that final yard of pace and needs to be stronger. Needs to work with a sprint coach to gain that extra yard…it IS possible.
Tilt…playing out from the back is stuff of nightmares.I am peurposely NOT going on Monday. Just because I am loathe to waste my last day off on this pathetic shambles. Its getting my head down that we are so poor and in all gonesty, I am not too sure we have made the right appointment. The chairman and owners, and Mal Brannigan have a lot of work to do. Im not even concinced Toure will last the season.
