Sorry to do a Donnelly, but I thought I would share an interesting article I came across regarding Martinez’s refreshing formation.
Have a read and see what you think http://www.zonalmarking.net/2012/05/16/wigan-stay-up-after-a-switch-to-3-4-3/
18 May 2012 at 12:04 am #87467Well done fellah for finding that. A great way of explaining ‘our system’.
18 May 2012 at 12:24 am #87470well done duke, great article.
when you here the chants from fans on the sidelines to managers of “you dont know what ur doin”…clearly…THEY DO!
hope john w henry dosent see that….he’ll be gone in a wiff waff!
18 May 2012 at 1:42 am #87484Obviously been watching Barcelona who adopted the same system at the beginning of their season and have used it predominantly all season ! They did switch to their usual default formation of 4 3 3 for certain games but on the whole played 3 4 3 !

18 May 2012 at 1:21 pm #87516Quite an interesting read & I had never realised that about the Chelsea game back in 2010, although i do remember us playing really well prior to Caldwell’s sending off.
Having said that though the article kinds of lets itself down by stating that the first time Bobby used the system this season was in the away game at Bolton when it had been used in all but a handful of games for some 2 months prior to that Bolton game. Lack of research like that kind of makes me wonder what other b0ll0x they’ve put in the article & tried to sound clever about

‘Lack of research’ and ‘b0llox’ aside (it was a Bolton away game on the 11th Feb, not home), it’s a good article as it is dealing with a switch in formation and its merits on the Premier League survival of Wigan.
The writer may have set out to try and ‘sound clever’, and despite getting a few facts about previous results wrong, he has demonstrated that he understands the particular system – its fluidity and how it allows a team to adapt – and I’m sure that was the main aim of his article.
Had he looked further into pre-Christmas results, he’d have seen that the system was dallied with somewhere around the beginning of December, but lack of suitable personnel meant it showed signs of promise but didn’t really flourish.
Decent article in my view.
