Obviously the marketing’s no good (if Bolton advertise in our local paper and we don’t, something’s going wrong), and some on here are suggesting you could be in town and not even know we were playing Man Utd, which is pretty dire. But the real reason our attendances have fallen off a cliff is staring Whelan in the face.

You can’t go on forever selling our prized assets. A team containing Heskey, Palacios, Valencia and Cattermole (perhaps one managed by Steve Bruce, with one eye on Europe) would have been worth another 2,000 on the gate. People know a lack of ambition when they see one. And, while getting Bobby in might prove to be a masterstroke in the long term, players recruited from the likes of Swansea City are simply not going to get bums on seats.

Sorry Martin but ive got to disagree with you there? It may be a minor factor but i do think its complete lack of marketing and money thats costing the club at the moment.

In fact il put marketing before the lack of money.

Ive got a season ticket and didnt know what time the game today kicked off. Yeah i could find it but if i was a thugby fan itd be looking down at me from all over town!

If you look on vital we are trying to get some ideas together to give to the club!

The marketing of our club is abysmal.
Even on the Springfield Park Stand concourse there are massive adverts for forthcoming peanut clodding events, but none for our matches.

I agree with you there, I think the club could be better off in someone elses hands, and i feel that will happen soon, Lets be honest whelan hasnt give wafc the ground for nothing,

first and last time i will congratulate anything wrlfc but the marketing is superb, you drive around wigan you know who they are playing next and how much. Its the kind of thing we need, advertise every home game on billboards, radio, newspaper.

Wrong, you’re on the wrong track. The reason is that we have now the hard core wigan fans, that’s it, we have come on so fast we have overtaken are ability to grow the support base and it will take a generation to get it up. In previous seaons we have attracted football fans who wanted to see premier league football. The novelty has worn off and combined with the credit crunch, they no longer have the money for this type of discretionary spending. We are where we are and any money spent on marketing is wasted in comparison to the additional fans it will bring on. Sad but we are a victim of our own success and being geographically located in an area saturated by premier league football.

Has it ever crossed anyone’s mind that the rugby fans who also supported Wigan Athletic are not coming any more?

Many people I know are expressing these sentiments to me after the way they have been treated by Dave Whelan. I know Horc and his friends are blinded to the fact that we need every fan we can get but we must face facts.

We can’t have it both ways, If we alienate the majority of potential support in Wigan (yes I know it is unpalatable) we can’t complain about low crowds.

Over to you Mr Horc for one of your pathetic obsessed rants.

the main thing for me has allready been eluded to

how many came yesterday , including united fans , just to watch utd ?
                    7 maybe 8 thou?

that leaves 9 maybe 10 thou for us

time to face facts , we have plateaued fan wise for whatever reason and i can only see it getting worse

                    #6212

For me the damage was done after our first season in prem with the huge hike in the cost of tickets, put people off. Couple that with the fact that whelan was in dispute with his workers at JJB, many a worker vowed to never give whelan a penny ever again ( sorry can’t remember what the dispute was over). These fans never returned

And I suppose the fact that most games can be watched in the pub doesn’t help,

But in a nutshell for me it’s all about cost, why would any armchair fan get off his arse and pay pay £30 to watch us get mauled by the big clubs or when we are holding our own get cheated by the referee!

Think we will only start to attract new fans when we start to beat the big clubs. People will make the effort if they think we have a chance of beating the likes of utd!

Thank you owd git for the invitation to reply to the utter bulls**t you post.
Unfortunately I haven’t got a clue what you are on about regarding ‘me and my mates being blinded by the fact we need every fan’.

I personally don’t give a damn if we have 2,000 or 20,000 on as long as I am one of the 2,000.

Unlike most on here I was one of the 850 against Bury in the League Cup, and also one of the 1,200 against Torquay.

If you are having a go because of my hatred of all things egg, I really don’t think that my ramblings about that on here are going to put people off watching the Latics.

As for alienating the majority, who, how, why?
I don’t understand where you are coming from with this.
The majority don’t watch any live sport nevermind hug the peanut if thats what you are implying.
