Just read this article and it was like looking back on my whole life watching the tics for the past 40 years.

[link2:3gt682f9]Why do Latics hate Wigan rugby so much,http://www.thisnorthernsoul.co.uk/index.php/articles/blogs/2108-why-do-wigan-rugby-hate-latics-so-much%5B/link2:3gt682f9%5D

The game against Liverpool could not be played at Central Park for segregation reasons. What the author forgot to mention is that whilst rival rugby fans could be trusted to stand side by side without kicking the cr@p out of each other, football fans couldnt.

The cup tie in 1990 was not long after the Hillsborough disaster, and was in a period where English football had only just returned from a UEFA ban thanks to the antics of the said scousers in 1985. Like it or not, Liverpool’s supporters had a pretty appalling reputation at the time.

Whilst I fully agree that many of Lindsays comments were disrespectful to Wigan Athletic, the decision to not allow CP to become a place for Woolies & Scousers to do battle was the right one at the time.

        :text-goodpost: JR & a cracking read.

So by your thinking, Goosey it was impossible to play the game because the ground, Central Park, which had 4 stands could not possibly have segregation put in hmmmm bit flawed that idea dont you think? Surely it would have been possible to give the Liverpool fans one of the side stands, with the upper seating area & then a line of policemen/stewards on either side to stop Latics fans going into the lower half of said stand?

By the way you’re being brave coming on here after your beloved Sunderland got beat by lowly Brighton last night.
All that money he spent, Spudyed wont last till Xmas.

I thought the “hate” thing was ended when the supporters of WAFC allowed Maurice Lindsay unchallenged a seat on the board, no protests no nothing.

That for me removed any “rugby hate” as he was the prime reason in the first place.

I have tried over the years to enjoy what the warriors do, after all, it is stupid that supporters in such a small town can’t get on with each other. But, I can’t, the reason for me being the patronising attitude displayed by a large proportion of the rugby fans- it occurs in the workplace, the pub, wherever, and usually involves smug expressions and snide comments when it’s discovered that I am a wigan athletic fan- this wouldn’t be so bad but then I usually find out that these loyal  wiganers are also man yuuu or liverpool followers!!
Of course, this is a bit of a stereotype, not all warriors fans hate the ‘tics or indeed support other football teams, and indeed, many latics followers are far from blameless, but it’s the reason I have unfortunately.

Latics fans of that generation that hate the rugby I have no issue with. As Mutty says, there wasn’t a safe way to segregate CP with the stands, turnstiles and toilets but I’m not sure whether that was the reason. Maybe the rugby didn’t want Latics to fill CP when the rugby wouldn’t the week after. I have no idea.

Latics fans that weren’t there then (99.9%) and hate the rugby I have to ask….why? It seems to me as though its used as a sort of ‘My Dad’s bigger than yours’ thing. I hate the rugby more than you so I’m a bigger Latics fan than you blah blah. It even goes to extreme lengths in that a friend of mine was punched in a pub for wearing a rugby top after returning from an away game. That’s another story.

The rugby side of it to me appears to be jealousy. Very rarely was an anti Latics song sung prior to 2005. I wasn’t ridiculed on coaches (granted its all in jest) and nobody cared who we played. Since Latics got into the PL (well, when it appeared we might) things have changed. An anti Latics song is sung regularly, ‘going down’ was sung during a rugby game when Blackpool took the lead on the last day and for celebrating our goal I was criticised and called a w@nker. Dave Whelan moving a rugby game to Widnes and changing fixtures hasn’t helped either, but the rugby fans can’t see the reasons for it. IE – PL football has to take precedence over all over events. The fact it used to happen in the lower leagues is irrelevant.

Both sides have their blinkered views and that will never change. No matter how many times you point out we both average the same number of home fans and that football damages the pitch more (groundsman’s words – this is blamed on him being a rugby fan of course) either side will still have their opinion and vent their side of the argument.

Personally I couldn’t give a stuff and will continue to support both until the day I die. On Saturday I will be constantly checking the Latics score whilst enjoying the pre-match at Wembley.

i dont get it when people say the younger generation cant hate the rugby because we wasnt born when it was really bad
                  1. it still goes on now, maybe not to the same extent now they couldnt possibly try to bully us now.
                  2. say it was us and bolton that had this arguement that went on for years, just because i was born after it does that mean i woudlnt be aloud to hate them ? surely thats how all rivalry is it gets passed down through generations and us kids learn the history.

McGoose – if I remember rightly, Latics looked into the cost & timing issues of concreting & installing crush barriers to the away end & Springfield Park & it wasn’t feasible mainly due to the timing issue of allowing everything to set, the testing & the issuing of a safety certificate.
Latics then looked at central Park & offered to pay both rent for the match & to pay for the installation & removal of segregation fencing & the rugby refused. Personally i have no problem with that, its their ground & they could do with it what they wanted. Not very neighbourly but Wigan RL’s priority was/is to Wigan Rl & if it didn’t suit them for whatever reason then fine
The issues I have with what you posted are:
                        1) rugby fans regularly kicked crap out of each other at that time & still do, its just not reported. I’ve only ever paid to see 6 rugby league games in my life & I’ve seen trouble at 5 of em (83%). Now I’ve been to far more football games & seen far more bother but it sure as hell doesn’t come anywhere close to trouble at 83% of the football games I’ve been to. Now I know 6 rugby league games is hardly a thorough sample of all the games played over the years but its led me to believe that I’ve either been really unfortunate with the games I’ve chosen or the trouble in & around rugby league games is hugely under reported
                        2) Your post seems to link the Hillsborough disaster to crowd trouble caused by Scousers & similar to the disaster at Heysel in 1985. That may not have been your intent but that’s how it came across. Liverpool supporters reputations were not appalling because of the Hillsborough disaster 18 months before this cup tie – far from it to be honest

The game should have been held at Springfield Park. It had a safety licence & was authorised by the fuzz & the council to hold “X” amount of people. My memory of why Latics tried to switch it is hazy to say the least but I can’t see any reason why if all the safety certificate’s were in place (& they were otherwise no games could have been held there) for the council & police to say Springfield Park couldn’t have been used. Was not the real reason that the club held the home leg away from Springfield Park because Bill Kenyon wanted to make money from the fixture – smaller clubs (more so non-leaguers in the FA Cup) always used to do it & the FA put a stop to it
If the police did say it couldn’t be held there then the club should have put up more of a fight & said that if they were perfectly happy for 8,000 football supporters to be in there for a game between latics & bolton then there’s no difference the same number watching for a game where Liverpool were the opposition
